Is extortion or shakedown a better word to describe the practice?

so every time I install something which is bundled with (say) java, I'll get java every time? How many copies of java with inconsistent and possibly incompatible behaviour does a person need?
example, say I have an app which comes bundled with "helper-program" version 1.0, which keeps its config files in ~/.helperprogram/config
and then I have another app which comes bundled with "helper-program" version 1.1 which keeps its config files in ~/.helperprogram/config
wtf??? am I missing something here?

I see your point and I agrree with the philosophy behind it. But in my post, "why" was a short way express "make a conjecture as to why based on that evidence alone"
