I'm optimistic about it. That may make me sound like a shill, sure. You sound very pessimistic, and pessimists, by their very nature, tend to be the sand in the gears of progress. Unsurprisingly, you misinterpret what I say. Let me rephrase Nostr is an open protocol, which can be used to replace twitter or github by decentralizing the network. Now that's interesting.

What most of the other users commenting on this fail to understand, is that Damus is built with the open protocol Nostr which allows inter-App communication. Nostr, by having an open decentralized protocol, basically makes all social media companies stupid. The big news here is that we are gaining a mass adoption of the Nostr protocol. Nostr is inherently open and free for the public and without company censorship. So no one person can control the dialogue, rather content that is against a communities guidelines will be brought down by the community collectively. cant wait to see what more happens on Nostr

Fair enough, firstly, other things use electricity, but I must imagine it's easy for you to reduce the benefits of bitcoin to enabling crime ( which fiat and gold also support ) when you just might be living in a country that has a stable currency ( if you are in the US you have the global reserve status ). Countries with weak economies and corrupt governments don't have such luxuries. So bitcoin can serve as an alternative ( Kenya, Nigeria ). Furthermore, as "informed" as it is on the current status of the project, you can't help but notice that it is espoused by a BitcoinSV proponent, and not a developer or someone that has experience with technical engineering. So when he talks about the technical challenges of the systems, take it with a grain of salt.

As a host of a lightning node, you can benefit by staking some btc in a cold wallet connected to your own node, and earning sats as transaction fees. So yes you do benefit from the BTC community. Your PayPal example is willfully ignorant. You send bitcoin, you receive bitcoin. The fact that it uses a different protocol doesn't matter as long as it upholds the decentralized ethos.

It's obvious they refuse to even mention the lightning network, which is faster than fiat ( which btw is also backed by nothing speculation, and most importantly monopolies of violence, erm I mean the government ). The fact that it consumes more energy than Argentina matters little considering how much energy is consumed by washing machines, or the machines that run fiat. https://news.bitcoin.com/banki...

Submission + - Neighbors build their own lightning-fast fiber-optic network (mercurynews.com)

k6mfw writes: Tech-rich but internet-poor, residents of the Silicon Valley neighborhood were fed up with sluggish broadband speeds of less than 25 Megabits-per-second (Mbps) download and 3 Mbps upload — the federal definition of a home unserved by adequate internet.

Comcast gave him a $17,000 estimate to connect his home to the faster internet service at a neighbor’s home. “You got to be kidding me – I can see it on the pole from my driveway,” Vanderlip said.

That was in 2017. Now, Vanderlip is president of the Los Altos Hills Community Fiber Association, which provides super-fast speeds — up to 10 Gigabits-per-second upload and download — to its over 40 association members, letting them transfer huge files and load webpages in the click of a computer mouse, Vanderlip said. That’s 125 times faster than the average download speed in Santa Clara County.
