NASA Tests All-Composite Prototype Crew Module 67

coondoggie writes "With an eye toward building safer, lighter and tougher spacecraft, NASA said today its prototype space crew module made up of composite materials handled tests simulating structural stresses of launch and atmospheric reentry. The idea behind NASA's Composite Crew Module project is to test new structural materials for possible future NASA spacecraft. According to NASA, composite materials are being looked at because they are stiff and lightweight and can be formed into complex shapes that may be more structurally efficient. In space travel, where every additional pound of weight drives costs higher, any weight savings provides increased payload capacity and potentially reduces mission expense."

I shop online like I shop in the local stores. This means, "I need something, I find out where it is, i compare some prices (more comparison for pricier items) and I buy." There's no browsing, checking out ads, etc. the ONLY times that ads get my attention is if they are funny, or are for a product I'm unfamiliar with that actually seems like it might be useful -and then I go back to shopping as normal.

Nanocosmetics Used Since Ancient Egypt 252

Roland Piquepaille writes "French researchers have found that Egyptians, Greek and Romans were using nanotechnology to dye their hair several thousands years ago. Nanowerk Spotlight reports they were using lead compounds which generated lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals with a diameter of only 5 nanometers. At a moment where many people wonder if the use of nanoparticles is safe, it's good to know that nanotechnology has been widely used for a very long time."

It's time to tell the truth. I am a 55 year-old man. My name is Andy Kaufman, and I live in New York City.

I am sincerely sorry to everyone for all my lies.

Journal Journal: Merry Christmas -- $$$$$exyGal

It's not the new year yet, but it seems like a good time to give thanks.

Long story short, I've had a good year. Great job, short commute, and dating again. I've become focused, but with great flexibility. I'm not sweating the big stuff, or the small stuff. The good stuff is in the middle.

May your holidays be commercial-free,

Journal Journal: 30 minipreps

I'm doing 30 minipreps. Which means that I can't fit them all into one microfuge. Annoying. My hands smell like E.coli. Should I be wearing gloves, yeah. Oh well. Bummer, dude.

Lab is very peaceful today. I'm the only one here. Listening to loud grrl rock which is something I can't really do when there are other people around.

Journal Journal: Teach me economics: Why are tech jobs going to India? 19

American companies are moving tech jobs overseas to India [more info]. Why? Simple, it's all about money. But how is that so? The article says that Indian programmers make 1/10th that of American programmers. Why do they make so much less?

I'm not an economist, but here's a some possible reasons:

Skipped work Friday afternoon to go visit family halfway across the state. It is nice to see green stuff that isn't contamination on my bacterial plates. I definitely have farming tendencies because anyplace there is good soil, it makes me want to stay there and raise crops. I'm not sure if this is evolutionarily advantageous for this era.
