It's a safety thing. Car drivers are much more likely to actually look in their blind spot if they HEAR something there.
Even if the driver checks their blind spot, most bikes are small enough to be hidden by the pillars that hold a cars roof up.
I've personally noticed this difference - I ride about 60k to and from work every day. I feel safer if I'm seen AND heard.
