Comment HTML5 + Javascript (Score 1) 194

With the exception of that compatibility with third party stuff that is likely not usable by alz patients, I would think a javascript dev could come up with a simple browser application that leverages HTML5's streaming audio and video capabilities to implement a simple video conf tool using touch screen computers. Perhaps a simple opening split screen that has thumbnail pictures of people the user knows in a sidebar, and a main screen that shows the realtime video.

Push on a face, and it 'dials' that person or whatever, it 'rings' the other end showing the caller's thumbnail pic large, they click the pic to 'answer'. And can do the same with other thumbnails at the same time to bring several people together. A small hangup button at the bottom left of each active video.

I had to make an MP3 player and 'internet radio' app for a technophobic senior, and went this route. Took some time to make the web app full screen properly for the browser + hardware used (a lenovo tablet running Android), but it worked.. all javascript + html5. No other libs or ui toolkits needed.

Bush's Electronic Archives Threaten To Swamp National Archives 185

ColdWetDog writes "The New York Times reports that the soon-to-be-disbanded Bush / Cheney White House threatens to overload the National Archives with close to 100 Terabytes of data. This includes the Barney Cam and even 'formats not previously dealt with.' By way of comparison, the Clinton White House dumped less than a single terabyte into the archives. Of course, Mr. Cheney, always the Good Citizen, tried to help out when he 'asserted this month in a court case that he had absolute discretion to decide which of his records are official and which are personal, and thus do not have to be transferred to the archives.' Glad to see that somebody over there is trying to clean up the cruft for posterity."

...yeah and who can really blame them? they are living under occupation in the most appalling conditions. what have they got to live for? where do they go now? they have been subject to collective punishment - no wonder there's so much hate over there. just look at the isreali/palastinian body count - the palastinians have suffered much much more. should that hate surprise you? currently, it seems that it's only the hawks on either side that seem to be getting what they want. disclaimer: i am english and live in london. i have no axe to grind either way. i am not religious - and dont like either sides religious and very self righteous rhetoric. however, i just dont understand how the israel govt. has got away behaving like this for so long. from the outside - it looks v much like the s african apartheid govt of the 1950-90's. i don't want to start a flame war - but seek to understand how the supporters of isreal think that the situation can be *fairly* resolved. er, peace to all!

Experts Say To Switch Browsers In Light of IE Vulnerability 455

It appears that the exploit in IE briefly mentioned a few days ago is causing a serious reaction: SteveAU writes "Microsoft has begun flooding media outlets with information advising users to switch to an alternate browser while a serious security flaw is being patched. The flaw, which affects all versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, is manifested via malware and has infected over 6,000 sites thus far. Microsoft states: 'The vulnerability exists as an invalid pointer reference in the data-binding function of Internet Explorer. When data binding is enabled (which is the default state), it is possible under certain conditions for an object to be released without updating the array length, leaving the potential to access the deleted object's memory space. This can cause Internet Explorer to exit unexpectedly, in a state that is exploitable.'" According to the BBC report, though, Microsoft itself is only asking that users be "vigilant while it investigated and prepared an emergency patch"; it's outside experts who say to dump IE (at least for now).

Update: 12/16 21:11 GMT by KD : Microsoft will issue an emergency critical update for IE tomorrow.

Comment Bill's new job (Score 1) 893

I didn't hear all the dialog at first, so I thought this was showing Bill's "new job" working at a shoe store, vis a vis Al in Married With Children.

I thought this was hilarious, since I'd been wondering what Bill's new daily job would be.

But then I could hear the dialog, and it was kinda down hill from there.

Arrest photo was a nice touch though. Maybe the cash register should have been a Microsoft POS system, and he'd have to ask the store manager how to work it and get a BSOD. "It always does that, just reboot..". When he goes out to his car, he should have hopped into a parked bulldozer instead, and continuing to talk to Jerry while hot-wiring it..

i'm sorry, but your talking complete rubbish. i work in the film industry and 35mm film is usually scanned in at 2k which is HD. even sometimes at 4k! i've shot on 16m, 35mm, super 35mm and on hd. film is a very mature technology while HD is still very young. i spend all day examining and working with BG plates shot on both. just because HD is new and digital doesn't mean it's *currently* better than the technology it's replacing. you sound like the early audio companies that said that CD's sounded better than LP's. they didn't then and have only just arrived recently. (listen to a lynn lp12...) the funny thing is that the new cameras have special "film grain" modes...
