Journal Journal: ufo filter: bykevin williams ( an SF short teaser)

sf short teaser. UFO filter: by kevin williams.

once I've taken the fun out of this... (get past 'idiots, explosions, falling anvils/ sex, violence + humor' and you're commercially dead) it'll be a decent SF story. (I'm thinking a comic-book.)
my zine has reformatted, i guess.

  christmas children;'s story
  romantic comedy, valenties/st pats.
SF action-adventure in July
and horror, halloween. (cartoon version)

  eh. It's a hobby.
6 novels later, i'm not rich: or even paying any bills with this yet.

enjoy anyway.

UFO filter by Kevin Williams.

âoeYes, we're sending you to earth as an observer. Learn to love it, Hector.â

âoeRelax, young jedialine; ignore the rumors you hear about the place. Earth in not that hostile, even if even trees fight for life down there.â

âoeYour job is simple. This extinction-event might shove humanity past the war-lord stage and into something that can manage things planet-wide.

âoeIf anything survives the pollution, climate-change and various war-lord corps, government and whatnot, we want details.â

âoeOh. So Iâ(TM)m going to put down roots somewhere and watch them change from locals to pros? Somewhere safe like the moon maybe?â

âoeNo. We don't send catalysis in for fun, apprentice. It's expensive and dangerous. You'll be in the soup.â

âoeBlast. So what happens this assignment?â

âoeWell, first you have to get over the violence. It's styling with flair down there, according to the gossip. Cultures of tension and posing, lots of them.â

âoeThen? The sensual side of things will always be a distraction; the passion pit is usually fatal.â

âoeIt's primitive yet. Most of the organizations can't even keep the water running; or clean yet. Medicine, justice and whatnot are all still abstracts.â

    âoeOh. Swell. And then what?â

âoeYou get the social-climbing side of things. Urban treachery and politics; the blame-game in fink world plus credit-stealing. If you want to.â

âoeIt's complicated. If the people can change the world with a noise, they'll do it. All to suit their own personal politics... and regardless of results. Walking on water means you can't swim to an enemy, got it?â

âoeIt usually ends up as someone taking everything you have for the very best of reasons. Ignoring you to death is an act of kindness and politics get worse with every step up.â

âoeTheir politics is worse than their violence. Swell.â

âoeYes, it is. Get used to it. Let's see... Isolate, sabotage, coverup, mud-ball... Physical violence, pitfalls... Greed, vanity, power... Plot, gossip, brag...â

âoeDandy. I get the general idea. Then what?â

âoeThat about covers it. All the rest is up to you and whatever you can make of things down there. Stay clear and don't bring any thugs home with you.â

âoeLuck, apprentice. Tell them nothing, it isn't safe.â

                                        ****

âoeWow. This is the churn-and-burn hereabouts?â

âoeDating.â I added after a couple blank but irked and irritated looks from the girl whose supper I just interrupted. She didn't want to play either at first, but then seemed to rally a bit, piqued by something in me.

Finally, there was a head-bob and a smothered giggle+grin at me from the next table; I passed formal inspection.

I grinned. That was a big change from most of the encounters here earthside so far. The reactions to my conversational gambits had varied from being me ignored to 'Go away or I'll call a cop.â

âoeYou work for a bank, don't you?â The blink from the I got from her was knowing. Wrong, but knowing. I let it slide. So far, none of these girls were ready for anything close to what I needed from them, but this one had kept talking at least.

âoeNo. I work, period. Office politics is like that, full of self-appointed enemies that lynch for fun and profit. Even on the moon.â

That got another startled but co-operative nod. âoeTrue. You need rhino-hide and the instincts of a weasel to survive these days. But yeah, this is the churn part of churn+burn dating; and so far you interest me. Make this nice, please. I don't need a new Wednesday-loon in my life, even if he is cute.â

âoeI just did nice, hon. So having something popular guarantees lots of nasty traffic hereabouts? Even in a bar?â

âoeCorrecto, tall, dark and dumb-as-a-post. A score is a score for floaters. The street isn't kind. This is a restaurant, by the way. Entertainment free, unless a food-fight breaks out. Fewer drunks, too.â

âoeI have other interests, hon. Tell me what you're here for instead, OK?â

âoeSupper, you idiot. Another microwaved snack didn't appeal to me tonight and Freddie here... That's the cook... makes a mean tofu sea-weed salad. Very healthy.â

âoeAnd what brings you here, strange-person? You're having the burger-plate in a Chinese restaurant, so it obviously isn't the food.â

âoeOh, you're about to go thru an extinction-event here on earth. I'm an official observer. Not the, an. What filters thru the mass die-off and lives is of interest. If you stay a high-tech society we want to know what you did and how.â

âoeIf you as a species start chasing bananas, clams and slugs for a living again, I get to go home.â

    âoeOh. You're an alien.â

    âoeAlien observer.â

âoeA UFO type, neat. Orb-server Yoda onna mission? Dandy. That extinction die-off thing doesn't sound healthy, tho.â

âoeLife gets weird sometimes. Listen, how much of the planet has croaked in the last few years? People are next. If you live, we want to know why. I'm here to watch and find out.â

âoeOk, fine, I can work with this. Do you do funny voices too?â

âoeHey! My tantric isn't funny. Well, most of the time.â

    âoeTantric?â

                                        ******

    âoeSLOWER!â

âoeFine, slower. Listen again. You're in a big electronic balloon, a pulsing magnetic field, getting something useful out of this, running a ball of light up your spine and counting to seven. Now let it go...â

âoeHere's the seven ka-push spots. Bottoms up, try again. Listen to my voice.â

                                          ***

âoeWow. He got away with that? Just what are they putting in the water down here?â

âoeStay away from the news, egghead. What's up? More garbage, probably. Electronic voting machines. Rigged elections, rigged courts and so on. General crap. Men!â

âoeHey, misogynist I am not. 51% of the pop girls are, 51% of the blame you get.â

âoeHa. The yoda-voice gets you nowhere out here, pervert. Yah, medicine, news, politics, education and anything else they can find gets 'adulterated', shall we say.â

âoeCorporations are in on the pollution, along with religious loons, fan-boys, trolls and special interest groups. Fanatics and loons pick up any leftover slack.â

âoeWar-lords big and small, Not thinking in planet terms yet. Sounds like the same people you deal with on the web. All your traffic belong to us.â

âoeYour noble psychos are any different in UFO-land?â

âoePower without responsibility is fatal. 'Align, align align' type of thing stops the managers from getting too localized; self-indulgent, serving or bent.â

      âoeEh, eh, eh?â

âoeSystems, orientation and output. More tantric.â

âoeOh. So you're here to help us with a new spark, one that makes sure humanity doesn't die off? By who?â

âoeHelp? No, not a chance, I'm rooting for robots now.â

âoeThe logic is simple. Help vermin and you end up with very healthy vermin. Beating stuff into them doesn't help either. You end up with healthy, stupid, bleeding and skilled vermin.â

âoeBeing a sparky won't work anyway. Most people are so lazy the 'reform' package makes almost no difference. It's the personal motivation that determines everything. Ask a teacher. Or a parole officer.â

    âoeThat sucks. What if...â

âoeStop right there. Purgatory has another name, it's called Happy-Valley. It's home of the weenies and where people who say 'It's not my fault!' go.â

    âoeOw. Control freaks?â

âoeStrong-arm war-lords? They don't listen to anything that doesn't suit them. Violence, bigotry, random performance. The usual greed, vanity and power-mad.â

    âoeGirls?â

âoeFor me? Here's yet another calculus, super-heroine Vectoress. Your bitchy, work, party or politics attitude? Not useful. A couple boy-friends later and most girls are trained to be porn-stars around here.â

âoeDamn. I thought I had an in there. So what's the filter-thing that gets us past the die-off?â

âoeI dunno, that's what I'm here to find out. Hopefully it doesn't mean traveling to some weird left-over farming village afterwards only to find out it was an accident of geology that saved everyone there.â

âoeOr it's the reasoned and balanced attitude of pathological liars or girl-rustlers from the third world that survive.â

âoeOr religious fanatics and corps using slave-labor? Yeah, it's pretty much women and children first around here, noble savage-wise. After granny gets tossed out first, naturally.â

âoeSo what can you tell me about survivalists, hon? Ones that aren't gun-clubs running terrorist-camps or the bunker types.â

âoeNot a whole lot. They hoard, right?â

âoeThere has to be somebody out there on this stupid mudball with the right survival instinct. I need to find them.â

âoeThe web is your friend, then. The web is your friend.â

                      ***

âoeComon, comon, somebody discover fire already!â

âoeRelax, Hector. Yesterday you did religion looney groups. From free, perfect and exactly what they wanted to time, effort and money.â

âoeAccording to you, even the pay-as-you-grow clusters aren't clued into your program yet.â

âoePay? Same goes with air and water and religion. Find, pay, grind. Every group I've seen has generals fighting yesterday's war.â

âoeIt gets worse. Social-genetics kills most bureaucracies here. Good people move up and out, dregs and dummies stay. After a few years it's bare minimum competence in any organization position.â

âoeI'm ready to start praying for an asteroid. These fruit-fly bottle-colony trying to live in their own sewage are icky. Pollution kills them off sooner or later, or the neighbors do.â

âoeSo art gets squeezed out and the techies in, normally?â

âoeYeah, bad money drives out good.â

                                  *******

âoeThe sad part is, they've discovered a couple ways already, I've seen them. The local war-lords usually kill them off, tho. Sometimes for food instead of pleasure or being a threat, but most of what I've found is remnants of groups that might've made something work planet wide.â

âoeSo this extinction is both pollution, climate and people driven?â

âoeYeah. And the people part is the deadliest of all.â

âoeI would've thought you needed a world-class survivor that took over the whole world here.â

âoeNaw. More of the same there, just bigger. Tribes are easy to spot. War-lords are easy to spot. I'm looking for worldly types, not somebody trying to make his family rich.â

The police state is not a mystery, or a mysterious entity.
It does not exist to manage resource utilization or further development, for starters.
The police state was created to destroy enemies, remove threats and steal anything useful to it's purposes.
Stealing usually becomes it's prime objective, methodology and purpose in life. Authoritarian states are like that. (We call them 'The secret-policeman's ball.' Like the mafia, they hang about in dark corners and look for troubles to cash in on. Both being cannibals, there are other similarities, too.) Honesty, hard work, brilliance are all non-starters. Bread and circuses it can control; and does understand.

Journal Journal: dirt deeds done cheap (novel extract)

Land-bank.

âoeMeet your new tutor, son. Me. Junior, daddy says it's time for you to grow up. Suit up. Pick out a tie already, a nice one, you're gonna be wearing it the rest of your life..â

âoeBut Uncle, he's deadparked! He hasn't built or made a new move in thirty years!â

âoeYah, you get like that with an organization. Fink-world means pushing on the weak links, developing, making waves. Gossip is easier to score on than thinking. Kill the wounded, survival of the connected and hot tech. Call him spiderman now, OK?â

âoeNo. Uncle, I hate this! I wanna go party with babes instead. A couple hotties are coming over tonight.â

âoeAnd that got shut down. Nope, no nookie for you anymore. you're dry and not-high these days. You heard the old man. No more glitter or vapor or for you. Little man, the family has news for you. Vandals, jackals and street-slime are off limits for ya now, it's time to go to work for the family firm. You're a land-bank developer now, you build stuff. So start thinking like one. In percentages.â

âoeBut my father doesn't even develop anymore. He sits around and uses the tips his flunkies dig up for him on other corporations. Dad's a vulture, he ends up mostly running around killing friends and making enemies for years. Hasn't done anything else for years.â

âoeAnd they're all family. Or friends. Most of them, anyway. Man, this sucks.â

âoeGrow up. You know more about friends than anyone else. Who else would you hit on?â

âoeThere's worse news. You don't see everything yet anyway, kiddo. Develop, weakness exploitation and advantage consolidation. Daddy is also cashing in by trying to recruit your uncle's enemies as friends now. Or victims. Political-favors type thing and move he can make.â

âoeAnd it's even worse than you think. Time to make moves and score, winner. You're second-gen and need to start thinking made-men. You'll learn. Buy city hall first or any plan they hear of gets passed to a current-connected favorite. They'll file ther serial numbers off and hand ot off on a platter. Find a favorite who likes that work , someone you've got enough on to keep them in line, get them in place there.â

âoeActually, that's what you were supposed to be doing while partying, boy. Collecting dirt on people like a real Mr. Land-man. Now? Welcome to downtown. Put a suit on. Develop, kill the weak, use dirt to your advantage.â

âoeNo. Bad enough the old man got started by vandalizing farmers till they came up cheap.â

âoeOut-maneuvered, bid and hated on most of them, too. If the plans from the school-board for their new school hadn't come his way he won't've ever gotten started at all.â

âoeThat time. He did have a few shopping centers to conodoize. Parking-lots made it for him, right?â

âoeHe did. By killing the neighborhood first, tho.â

âoeMan, I don't like this! This sucks, uncle. Block-busting by renting to gangs and grabbing the rest of the neighborhood as people ran off? He 's not only a slum-lord, he made the slum first.â

âoeGet used to that. Those thugs come in handy with the hard cases who don't want to sell.â

    âoeBut I wanna party!â

âoeAnd he's sending you out to make traffic for him instead. Get used to it. Which dirty-deed do you want to do first? Land, politics or finance?â

âoeThat's being a developer, all right. It's all dirty deeds. Think we can get a hotel thru city hall? A mall? Something clean and non-violent, maybe?â

âoeNope. You'd have Asian gangs shooting up the driveway by supper if you tried that, or someone else. Any city-minion clerk that ok'd you would get machined-gunned down in a parking-lot by tonight, trust me.â

âoeRelax, kid. That's actually happened. It's a dirty world and people play hard out there.â

âoeWanna get in the zone? Ditto getting a park hived off for you to condo-ize, or having the feds hand you a massive office tower. Get in line for pork-barrel is weird; and killing pigs is the least of that work. Info is more than crap-throwing in the papers, it gets dangerous. Having a well-placed cop or two leaking to you will make more ops than you know.â

âoeSpend your time, money and effort well, newbie. Daddy wants fast results, too.â

âoeHa. That means anything I get together he'll take over, right?â

âoeA percentage of, if he can. Don't tell him and it won't happen, maybe. Well, if you're lucky. Your people will leak too.â

Journal Journal: rant-mode

Losing faith in humanity one person at a time? Naw, whole governments at a time these sad days.

    Looks good, doesn't work.

Here? No parking at new stadium (which is condoized), new marble at shopping centers, (power outages and dead trees all over.) Can't build bridges, lay red brick can't survey tunnels.

People? The bullshit passionate, psycho gamers and lunchmeat technocrats.

You like? Eww. Jealousy and vengeance, gaming for the 1% and easily-bought expertise.
Vandals, jackals and nobles who've moved from lynching bandits to collecting taxes.

So. Welcome, diebold. Hello, monsanto. Any mineral discovery gets 32 indian tribes claiming it as their traditional territory, any oil gets 32 different groups fighting over that. Or a one-man frozen-out bottle-neck.

I'm not even going to start in on corp espionage. Mickysoft pays 5 billion a year for what it steals for example, and that doesn't count trolls and submarining.

Faithless, whole divisions at a time. You would not believe the sleaze in communications, for example. (the news+ weather brought to you by tobacco companies.)

Even in canada, it includes random bombings, (Van, bc, stopping free satellite cable), entrapment of TV service providers, (Northen TV), ANY crits of the feds.

I gonna say cielia dion, bieber and s.twain here too. popular culture? How long has it been since MTV ceased being a (red-headed) force?

Honey-bees? Hospital infections? Molesting priests. Education that isn't anything but self-serving propaganda.

Well, water is running out all over. Dead empty rivers, dry reservoirs. New plagues and invasive species are stalking various lands. Mystery die-offs, too.

    mega-projects and mega-disasters.

    looks good. Doesn't work.

    Phones? Leaky, expensive, cancerous.

    Food, maybe?

Bah. The human race is not sufficiently enlightened to do anything in it's own interest yet.

âoeThe aliens? They aren't interested in us. At all. Never have been.â

âoeLook, it's simple enough. Most people don't work. Well, unless they
have to. How many people do you know have projects, or even useful
    activities? Most don't want a lifesaver, a recorder-breaker or
development-help around them. A cop-jock, priest or judge with you,
always? With the naked ape, usually nothing but money, fun and
control gets selected; and this monkey really wanted popular types. The
aliens, when they came, put some cameras up and simply closed the whole
    thing down two weeks later.â

âoeWhy? Successful intelligence here is predatory, and that's kind of
messy to start with. Sucessful urbanization is a clean water supply and
things start getting iffy right there. Is your home-village watered yet?
Regularly? Successful civilization is a realized citizenry, even if it
has to come up thru a system that usually selects for the company of
pathological liars, sociopaths and psychotic war-lords.â

âoeThat doesn't happen here. Bullshit. Can't get thru the day without it.
Getting it licked comes first, then maybe anything else. 'Game on!' is
the rule, not the exception and winning is the only thing.

âoeThe consensus among space-faring types was there's no real hope.
Females haven't even learned to talk yet and they make up 51% of the
population. As a matter of fact, the more social you were, the bigger
chance there was of home being a ghetto of one type or another.â

âoeSee, there's a self-destruct built in the human condition. There's just
'way too many people willing to use gangs and psychotic hate-campaigns
to score. Because they work, naturally. Different is strange, and
probably dangerous. The definition of a winner is someone who can make
moves and score, right?â Have something bleed, giggle or ring the
    cash-register for you?â

âoeGreed, vanity, control. Resources, power, fame. Ask a cop and it's sex,
vengeance and money. The beast is not very complicated hereabouts. Or
even very likely to keep the water running. 'Lie, cheat, steal, kill'
makes for a interesting slum and that's about it.

âoeSelf-indulgence plus politics does not equal work. So the human
condition is the problem, not the answer. Got it yet? Oh, and politics
is usually the handest slum of roving psychotics, pointed in the right
    direction.â

âoeJustice is peacekeeping, or giving the strong what they want. Education,
like religion, is whatever propaganda that serves the elite. Medicene
    gets turned into a money-maker.â

âoeIt's simple enough. There was no money in playing with math, so most
people didn't do that. Simple enough, right? And the locals get dumped
for stealing too many banana-breaks from each other.â

Journal Journal: snivel blog

Sept 30 2013 Monday .. Snivel-blog

Three sales. Two fan letters. No traction. (ARRGH, so close.) So now what?

I released 'Girl-ghost!' on Sept 26th, my birthday. A real book launch, complete (now) with films adverts, a new book, and me spamming my fans about it.)

The books have dudded. Total sales under $10; an order of magnitude out of even getting paid. (I HATE paypal. Nothing but spam from them so far; worse to come as far as the news reads. They want at least $10, too. Or a $75.00 to a drop-box stateside, otherwise.)

Positive thinking? Like work, if they pay for it, I get rave reviews and fan-mail. SF is best. Freebies are a waste of time, just like fantasy. (Even cartoons move better than the Arron+Henna series. The one I released.)

Just like work. If they're paying for it, I'm wonderful. (To the boss.) If they aren't paying me, I'm shit-pit. (Will their culture produce a working society, defining a working society as having a functional (public) water system? Very dubious. Politics rules supreme, not survival.)

    Snivel, snivel, snivel.

Still, I need work again. Expenses are 1200 mth, income, 8.

The difficult thing there is my arthritis is getting worse. A walking range of 100 feet between rest-stops, a working ability of an hour or two, no lifting anymore, no walking, no standing for very long. (Hips going crunchy, constant ache. Knee a pain now, feet numb out, legs cramp. HATE stairs. I carry pain-killers everywhere, always. Sucks to alive, basically.)

Have I mentioned I'm a smelly, weird creep? With a double dose of doc'ed weird?

So I can't work at what Iâ(TM)ve been doing the last 40 years at all. And can't FIND anything where I just sit and yak. I've been spreading paper around, looking.

Plus it's been 35 years since university. (I did my first program in pascal. Admittedly, borland did both object + straight pascal in the package, but I STILL look at c++ with suspicion.)

Hurts to move. Bored sitting still. The books aren't getting any traction. (Siiiigh. Even with 10,000 paying fans, I couldn't afford to quit the day job anyway. The one I don't have anymore.)

So now what? I'm dry here. (I wrote 3 books while the 2 yr job at Tri-co lasted. NOTHING except what I think was vermin stealing as much as they could came out of that.)

Find someone who will pay for it and has no shit-pit to annoy them? Neat, but how?

Man. Turned 59. My body fell apart. The eco collapsed. The ecology sounds worse. (Including bees, additives and GM there.)

Ya gotta kiss 3000 frogs before you find a (prince, warlord, bandit, grunt) etc?

I really need an etc. I was here, worked hard and found out social existence sucks big-time.

Did have a good week, thou. Birthday gifties extraordinaire, (fudge. Money, new quilt, (with pockets. Oh well, Iâ(TM)ve been thinking of starting dating again anyway.) CAKE! Party. Looked for monica under the desk, didn't see her. Rats-rats-rats-rats.) A trickle of fan-mail. One fan liked what he saw + bought a copy of everything. Change turned up in my fall coat. A lost package got returned. A job interview. (dud.)

Nasty, nasty cold. Still getting rid of that.

Grind on and hope this ends soon. Been there, done that, not interested in doing it again anytime soon, thou.

Journal Journal: human history timeline

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/09/03/canadian_comet_impact_fingered_for_triggering_younger_dryas_climate_shift/
-----------------------

river-mouth civilizations... A human history time-line.

And you know what comes out of rivers these days. (Well, nothing much anymore for a lot of them, but that's beside the point.)

If I have this time-line correct: (A?) comet hits Quebec ice, makes (minnie) ice-age, (glacial lakes release?)
Forcing a new food chain on humanity thru climate change.

The ice-age lowers water levels + farming explodes in (exposed) deltas.

The melt 1000 yrs later drowns our (proto. HA!) civilizations (India, Florida, etc)

The river-valley nonsense well underway 5000 yrs later (after settling where migrating herds cross rivers. Middle-east antelope, ie.)

1000 ad, Viking square the circle by settling continental NA. (the crusades, marco polo etc)

Around 1400 first global pandemics release European exploration-craze. (black death, measles, syphilis.)

(china's junking around,+ puritan (hello cromwell. what else did you do?) settlements. Eventually.

Cute. Today's little globalization effort is a economic and not cultural rationalization?

And tin-foil hats block signals, making them illegal?

? So where are the ufo's already?

drat, I was doing so well there for a moment....

Journal Journal: fines, fees royalties

Fees, Fines and Royalties. Wes Aug 21st 2013
(after the virus-attack, a burnt drive, income-tax hack and plant-closure.)

  And let's not forget taxes.

Big-brother is nickel and dimeing us to death, and the nasty part of this is, a lot of it is our own fault.

No, this is not a traffic-camera rant. At a 10% for sending pics in, most days I won't even to go to work. There are LOTS of bad drivers out there.

You have cable and the web, right? The only reason your home computer is not a web-site is that the cable companies want to upsell you to a server.

That handy little stalker spy-phone of yours have radio yet? FM? CB, shorts, etc etc etc. No?

The TV that watches you a home-broadcaster anytime soon?
(Eww. Good Lord, Rock around the Lamppost Part Two. In HD. With fat kids that don't know the difference between satire and disgusting. Where 'No, YOU suck!' is considered wit. Yuck. Pardon me while I go kill the TV, wouldja? Ah, just in case, you know?)

OK, so education, medicine and the legal system are all treated as money-makers first, services second. Censored ed, producing robots. Experimental meds making more problems than they solve.

And a legal system designed to produce cannon-fodder, not justice.

Which brings us back to the royalties thing. Pay-per-view, usage and listen. Buy the byte, right?

They are getting preemptive in convictions again.

I've had people create bank accounts, then send bills in for me. Things are only gonna get worse there. Finding the evidence needed to get rid of someone was first, right? Universities ASSUME you make 75.00 worth of Xeroxes a year and bill you for it in your fees. (Canada)

My, none of them have been students anytime in the last couple of centuries, have they?

My, how predatory. There'll be a few less police forces soon.

      Seems logical to me.

Fortunately for me, I dropped TV long ago. They were going to have to pay me to watch BEFORE the new mill hit. Now they want to charge for it? HA!

(Say, and new super-heros out there? Past transformers, turtles, etc? WHY? Does sponge-bob or dora count? Amie. Really? 12 year olds are cute, but not dating-material to me.)

Oh yeah, the penguins. Naturally. Fort salivate-13 in space, next. With Harvey Muddy, a different space-invader every week (attack of the religious loons) and the fâ"kup factory hard at work.

Vampires, zombies and people living the dream. Looks like a mercury over-dose to me.

Like the Dr suess fable. Air is next.
(Ask the West coast how they like their radiation sicknesses. Oh, by the way, I visited iceland DURING the eruption that closed europe. I just came in the upwind side and didn't have any problems.)

Bah, humbug, fooey. Everything that happens outside the home, the corps patient. Or trolls do. Or the authorities want a fee for.

And get the hell off my lawn while I'm at it, I guess.

Oh, and by me... SF moves best, then cartoons, then fantasy. (in the tens, but what the hey...)

Journal Journal: cannibalism

Cannibalism, lynch-mobs, ostracized. (prison)
                                        sub-title : Cannibalism causes collapses.

Cultural jurisprudence is a weird thing... The 'fad, fashion, habit, tradition' method of making law. Mob rule, basically.

Common law, in england. As compared to civil codes and derivatives, like a bill of rights.

Some African cultures use town-meeting mobs to select victims... For whatever reason. (Witchcraft is common.) Then they strip the selected of their property.

(Like city-hall expropriating property to sell to developers, one of the more interesting things happening stateside these days.
Has city-hall taken an interest in how you're doing, with an eye to messing around yet? Look for a vulture-culture buyer in the background. Taxi-licenses are VERY commonly used like this.)

Not many cultures actually survive this kind of self-abuse, do they? Or develop very well. You eat the rich first.

Interesting place to live if any half-dozen members of the community can select people to destroy and sic the local psychotics (gangs) on them.
Even more interesting if 'macho' (which means vengeance) is a value there.

Flakes, floaters and the vacuous, looking for something to destroy. (For the greater good. Theirs.)

Cannibalism hereabouts (canada) is getting to be an admin function. There is the 'Recovering proceeds from Crime bill, which strips illegal income from criminals. That's criminal law.

There is also the food bills, which make it illegal to harvest and bottle dandelions. (With a label on the bottle, which makes you a drug-trafficker here.)

Your home can be seized, there's no due process, they can CHARGE you for keeping the evidence and the (secret) tribunals decision is final, no appeal.
Everything is seized, sold to cover costs and you're left with nothing.

Like having something grabbed at a border, or carrying cash thru an airport, or parking tickets. The assumption is you're guilty; and after taking everything, they leave. (Well, sometimes you're imprisoned too.)

Asian cultures have a lynch-mob tradition. You get surrounded and dissed, sometimes to death if whatever you got caught doing is heinous enough. Flash-mobs on the internet are the new version of that.

System, organization and reflex. What's your culture forbid? (Remember that morality is the current game-laws, please. What makes a society function here is revolting there, and vise versa.)

Steal from them, kill habitual trouble-makers, or the western version, lock 'em up for a few years. Till they smarten up, eh? Or learn a legal trade.

Without making them do something weird like pass the blue-book calculus before they can get out, to drive the learning habit in.
Carpentry gets a point, maybe. So would moving to Australia or joining the army, in the not-so-distant past.

(Hey, come to think of it, they don't teach self-defense in schools yet, just running and jumping. I think I'm pushing the outer limits of intellectual culture here.)

Like socialist systems, cannibalism is a last gasp, I think. Preemptive arrests, monetizing rights (legal aid, etc.), other forms of legalized cannibalization...

(Eco jurisprudence make the cost of the crime/punishment a economic function, Lose a license for a year = 5000 dollars, the average cost of a car for a year.
A rich man's world again, eh? Just try paying for a lawyer these days. Even a jurimetrics decision. Computers are 96% accurate these days and NOT used at all.)

Liberty, freedoms, privilege and prerogative. If it doesn't get stolen, you get charged for it.

(For the love of god... At liberty to shop, free to do so when they're open, a money privilege and you can demand satisfaction. Ok? Got the general idea now?)

Putting face-detection tech on plates and people trying to turnstile their way into a gated community or shopping center? Kiss liberty goodbye.

  Bleah.

  Cannibalism causes collapses. (thesis.)

Lynch-mobs get random. (Get the heretic!)

Prison is used for cannon-fodder.

A passionate, gamer or tech-noid culture. Tribal, feudal and tech society.

So what's your poison today, eh?

A better question is 'what's your reflex?'.
