Japan To Create a Nuclear Meltdown 222

Taco Cowboy writes "Japanese researchers are planning an experiment to better understand what transpires during a nuclear meltdown by attempting to create a controlled nuclear meltdown. Using a scaled down version of a nuclear reactor — essentially a meter long stainless steel container — the experiment will involve the insertion of a foot long (30 cm) nuclear fuel rod, starting the fission process, and then draining the coolant. The experiment is scheduled to take place later this year."

Indonesian Erruption Forces Evacuation of 1300 36

ABC News reports that "A volcano in western Indonesia erupted again Sunday, unleashing volcanic ash high into the sky and forcing the evacuation of villagers living around its slope. Officials raised Mount Sinabung's alert status to the second-highest level after the 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) -high mountain erupted early Sunday, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Authorities were working to evacuate residents from four North Sumatra province villages located within the mountain's three-kilometer (two-mile) danger zone, Nugroho said. About 1,300 villagers have been relocated to safer areas so far. It was the volcano's second big eruption since late last month, with its Oct. 24 explosion prompting the evacuation of more than 3,300 people." This video of Sinabung's 2010 eruption gives some clue about what to expect.

And Iceland (103,000 sq km) is just over 1% of the size of Australia ( 7,741,220 sq km) - even bearing in mind that both have uninhabitable regions in the middle of them. Also I think Iceland is part of the main transocean lines between America and Europe, so has greater access to bandwidth anyway. All told, I'd guess that the costs of installing infrastructure, intra-city comms etc. are costlier/more problematic in Australia than in Iceland.

Potentially I'd say it was related to this story ( http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2013/09/freedom-hosting-fbi/ ) about the FBI having control over a number of Tor servers. Initially they were aiming for Freedom Hosting, but if that can do it for one site/service, I'm sure they can do the same for others...
