Comment Is Spot Instances for unused capacity at fault? (Score 1) 93

I seen to recall a post on slashdot about Amazon Introduces Bidding For EC2 Compute Time. This announcement took place on 12/14/2009, which coincides with the increase in average ping latency as illustrated in cloudkick's chart. Was Amazon unprepared for the increase in demand created as a result of bidding off of the unused EC2 capacity?

I am sure that people came up with some pretty creative thing to do with low priced EC2 capacity.

Comment Comcast has dening this rumer (Score 1) 160

Typically Comcast does not comment on Mergers and Acquisition rumors. However, they have come out publicly and denied that there is a deal to acquire NBC. Comcast said, âoeWhile we do not normally comment on merger and acquisition rumors, the report that Comcast has a deal to acquire NBC Universal is inaccurate.â

NBC has not made any comment.

Submission + - New NASA system to keep lightning off launchpad (networkworld.com)

coondoggie writes: "NASA is building an enormous lightning protection system at the Kennedy Space Center that will not only protect people and equipment but will collect strike information for analysis by launch managers. The new structure called a catenary wire system, will be the largest on the space compound and will feature large cables strung between three 594-foot-tall steel and fiberglass towers. Each tower is topped with a fiberglass mast and a series of catenary wires and down conductors designed to divert lightning away from the rocket and service structure. This configuration helps keep the vehicle isolated from dangerous lightning currents, NASA said. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/22696"

Submission + - Why do games still have levels? (blogspot.com) 1

a.d.venturer writes: Elite, the Metroid series, Dungeon Siege, God of War I and II, Half-Life (but not Half-Life 2), Shadow of the Colossus, the Grand Theft Auto series; some of the best games ever (and Dungeon Siege) have done away with the level mechanic and created uninterrupted game spaces devoid of loading screens and artificial breaks between periods of play. Much like cut scenes, level loads are anathema to enjoyment of game play, and a throwback to the era of the Vic-20 and Commodore 64 when games were stored on cassette tapes, and memory was measured in kilobytes. So in this era of multi-megabyte and gigabyte memory and fast access storage devices why do we continue to have games that are dominated by the level structure, be they commercial (Portal, Team Fortress 2), independent (Darwinia) and amateur (Nethack, Angband)? Why do games still have levels?
