Comment Why aren't lots of A grades expected? (Score 1) 177

To get accepted into Harvard (as an undergrad) a person usually needs a cumulative GPA above 4.0, a very high SAT school, participation in multiple extracurricular activities, fluency in multiple languages, excellent writing skills, and it helps to excel at playing an instrument. Shouldn't it be expected that all of these people are capable of getting high grades? It seems like the problem here is Harvard's faculty forgetting that the school only accepts the best of the best. I would think that something is terribly wrong if most Harvard students were not earning A grades in all of their classes.

Extracurricular activities would not be a problem if kids were not also wasting time on video games and the internet. Kids that are not addicted to gaming, short videos, and social media do just fine with extracurriculars. The extracurriculars keep them from getting bored. I took my son's devices away and now he is happy with three music lessons a week, music practice, math tutoring, and rocketry.

Kids might be able to get through K-12 curriculum without homework. But if they have not learned to work at home they will not succeed in advanced education. College and many trade schools will continue to require work outside of class. Kids who do not know how to manage the workload, how to do their own research, and how to write without a teacher on hand will fail in adult education. So they need some homework to prepare them for life beyond high school.

In January of 2025 I switched from iOS to Android. After using iOS for over a year I am convinced that Tim Cook has never actually used an iPhone. Siri, Maps, and autocorrect are all train wrecks and always have been. The system settings app seems to have been organized by rolling d20s. If Cook had actually used iPhones the people responsible for some very important parts of iOS would have been sacked in the 2010s. Hopefully Ternus actually realizes how terrible some parts of iOS are and will actually get them fixed.

Who am I kidding? This is Apple, they'll just add another lens to the back of the next iPhone and offer a blue model.

In the 1990s there was only one person in my circle of friends who could get a broadband connection. He would download from the warez scene ftp servers and the rest of us went to his house to load up Zip disks of the latest releases. But once CD burners became affordable we all switched to those and our Zip drives were forgotten, tossed in a box of old hardware that eventually went to the great recycling center in the sky.

Comment Re: LinkedIn? (Score 1) 188

There are people who spend hours a day reading all kinds of AI slop LinkedIn posts that have nothing to do with jobs. I know people who stopped using Instagram, X, Bluesky, and Threads for marketing entirely because nobody pays attention to anything on those platforms. But they make lots of money from their LinkedIn posts because LinkedIn users just love that shit.
