Journal nizo's Journal: CGI, my life, the universe, and everything 12

Well, instead of working on classwork or finishing my latest drawing, I made this instead. Yeah it is pretty laughable, but I just had to start fiddling around with Vue after buying a copy this weekend. The girl and horse are imported from Poser (sadly her hair didn't come along for the trip). I guess deep down I really am interested in CGI, but I keep telling myself that since there is no way I am moving, it would be nearly impossible to find work doing it here. But damn it would be fun.....

I do know something: I must start creating things. I don't know if it will be drawing, writing, or what, but the urge is there. If I can eventually find someplace in this world where that puts food on the table for me, I will be set.

You also seem to have misplaced her clothes...

Heh, well that is part of the charcter (no not porn; think something along the lines of a feral child) The long hair would have helped to make her nekkididdity less obvious, but alas I will probably need to import it as a seperate object. The horse is supposed to be nekkid, but no one will complain about that of course.
  • I'm feeling that itch, too. How to support the family though? That's the toughie. Especially since any career change will mean starting out on the bottom rung...

Now if you want to move to portland, there is an Art Institute hear and a growing CGI house... The guy who did the PJs (Will Vinton, I think) has a CGI place that's growing. Personally, I'm far more interested in creating videogames, so that would entail a move- or a big enough lottery winning to start my own studio;-)

Yeah starting out on the bottom rung is hard for me too. It isn't being new man on the block; it is the money, plain and simple.

Well, there are actually two places I could learn here, including a BA program that is supposed to be really good. But I can't imagine what I would do for a living here in NM, and I can't move (as in, it ain't gonna happen because I would have to leave my kids behind to do it). So you are saying you would like to design cut scenes for video games, or something else?

      • I'm attracted to the actual design of the video games. Creating the maps and levels and objects and such. I have a couple ideas that I think would make really cool video games, but have neither the ability or time to actually do anything with them. Though that could change in the next year or so. In movies, I'm interested in writing screenplays, but that's about it. The rest of the industry really doesn't appeal to me. But, to get on at a gamer shop I'd start bottom rung (not that ~$30k is bad- its ju

Well, I really want to start a small business, gaining experience (and piles of money :-) ) on the side. The only problems are a) I don't know what kind of small business and b) I am pretty sure I would absolutely despise the day-to-day operation of a small biz. So what this would imply is I need to find some other people with an idea that trips my trigger, and hopefully add enough value to jump onboard. Actually I lied: I DO have some ideas, but none of them will make me piles of money :-| So if you have a

Can't say I've ever done that. Usually, when I change careers, I start out at least mid-way in the other career. Part of that is trying to find something that's more of a hybrid job, one where you already have work experience that partially relates, and skills for the areas that are "new".

Was just reading this book about living below your means -
      • I tried changing careers before, but I keep ending up back int he legal industry. Now I've pretty much maxed out what I can do and I have a love/hate affair with it. My job is a good one, but it is still a job, not a passion. The problem is that I am very good at what I do, so its hard to turn my back on that and, during trial times, there is a rush that comes that's hard to describe. But that rush comes at the cost of life and time and everything else- so you resent trial, too. It is very, odd. Diffi
  • No longer as fugly!

And yes, CG rocks. Rhino3D rocks. CG is hard if you don't have the skill for it. I don't, but I used to work hard at it anyway. :-D

Yeah I used to play around with ac3d back when it was a freebie; twas fun. I don't know if I want to go down this route our not, but so far I am justifying the tool purchases as a way to test the waters, as well as a way to create reference pictures to sketch from. Poser and Vue are perfect for that, though until I learn how to use the tools better I am usually sick of looking at something by the time I finally get the reference picture done :-)

Rhino3D is free for your first 20 saves. :-D Fully featured, great program.

Also very cheap for what it is. Used to be cheaper, but they keep adding features to it. :-D

Awesome company though, email tech support with a bug, programmer emailed me back... One time I emailed the company and got a response back from the CEO! You don't see that from a multi million dollar international company every day. :)
