Comment Human Migration (Score 1) 64

I would like to know exactly when and where humans (and Neanderthals) migrated around the world. Did Homo Sapiens get to Europe 50 thousand years ago, or was it 90 thousand years ago? Were the Americas populated 15 thousand years ago, or was it 50 thousand years ago? Discovered artifacts is a shitty method for concluding a definitive timeline.

In Windows Pro or Ent it is easy to disable automatic updates. Group Policy Editor: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business > Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled > Notify for download and auto install. Windows Defender/Antivirus is another story. I have it disabled in one of my VMs, but I have trouble duplicating it.

Comment ICE vs. EV Noise (Score 1) 219

I welcome the age of EVs so I do not have to hear the Dodge Challenger owners rev their engines through my neighborhood that has a 25-mph speed limit. My only issue will be that stupid backup pedestrian noise that EVs make. We already have reverse lights and a backup camera, what is with that noise? My ICE is almost silent in reverse and I have not hit a pedestrian in weeks.

Is there a search engine that can exclude domains, like a list of thousands? something like "-site:C:\MASSIVE-LIST.TXT". That would be nice. And, no, not an extension where I have to add each site individually because they are in a database file. A text file that I can edit easily and distribute. You could also submit the lists to get votes and the winners would be available as a selection on the main search page to save time for other users. It would be ripe for abuse, but what isn't?

You did not understand my statement. “The cloud" is never the answer to anything. “The cloud" can steal, share, leak, and sell your data. Never tell anyone to use “The cloud". Recommend a specific company's storage solution. “The cloud" is a bullshit term even if you combine it with redundancy, hard copies, or magic beans.

How will rules stop third party software, like MoveIT or SolarWinds, from being the attack vector? New rule: no third-party software? Newegg phone support tried to get me with a fee a while back. I told them to check my purchase history and threatened to shop elsewhere. They were very nice after that and waved all fees. I'm sure not everyone can pull that off. Newegg used to be better, but they are still better than Amazon. At least the search function works and many of the items are "sold and shipped" by them. The Amazon search function is a big bait and switch scam that produces hundreds if not thousands of irrelevant results. They should be ashamed of themselves but I know they are not.

I had the same issue with Corsair. Sent a product back under warranty (high-capacity SSD), they said I sent back a much cheaper item (a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter). They actually sent me back a new replacement adapter, which costs like three bucks. I purchase a lot of computer products per year (power supplies and RAM for builds), but I will never use a Corsair product again. They screwed me for a few bucks only to lose thousands from a customer.

The TMP 2.0 and Intel 8th gen CPU requirements are only for upgrading. The Windows 11 requirements for a clean install are TPM 1.1 and more than 1 core. You can install Windows 11 on a very old machine as most Intel 6th and 7th gen motherboards include TPM 1.1. I even have a 4th gen CPU that did not need any bypass crap to do a clean Windows 11 install. And yes, it runs fast as long as you use an SSD. I hope you are not video editing on a 4th gen Intel CPU. Call your neighbors 15-year-old son so he can back up your data and install Windows 11 for you.

I always assumed a nuclear intercontinental ballistic missile built in the U.S. would have a guidance system that could keep it on course even after hitting a MiG or a frozen chicken. Sadly, it seems I was overly optimistic.
