My friends in the iOS app business see much smaller margins than vs desktop. Now consider that Apple takes 30% of the purchase price. This means that of the $60 cost Apple walks away with a handsome $18 leaving MSFT with $42. Unless the profit margin is such that there is a 60% mark-up on software MSFT stands to make *less* than Apple.

I'm not quite sure what your son's intended major is but if it is CS and he's half as bright and a self starter as you've indicated he should take the time to do something completely unrelated to programming/CS. There are a lot of 'tools' out there who know how to program but lack the insight and purpose that completely unrelated activities can afford.

Managers, don't need someone who knows how to code. They need self starters who can learn the next technology and also understand the value of customer service, community service, or service to others in any capacity.

...but you can do a heckuva lot.

I actually just embarked upon this very experiment. With a Win 8 tablet no less. Today, you can get a tablet with an i5 processor and a full windows install. For the last 2 weeks I've exclusively used this tablet as my sole work platform, including this very moment.

Now I will say that some behavior modification is/was in order. Due to present day drive space vs cost limitations, Google Drive, Sky Drive, etc are now part of my every day experience for management of files.Counter tablet behavior is sometime called for too: I plug in to the an external monitor and full sized keyboard during the times than my highest levels of productivity are needed or as tasks demand.

IMO tablet only is going to be commonplace before anyone expects.Having the flexibility to bea workhorse, terrific communications and consumption device, and compact all-in-one package has been a terrific experience.

I don't see myself going back to a laptop/workstation. Especially with some tablets having 'snap-on' keyboards for when I want to go retro.

IMO the point being made is that use of inflammatory rhetorical devices such as 'Agent Orange" are, in fact, counter productive: a certain portion of the audience immediate tunes out instead of actually reading the article. In fact, those predisposed to be influenced by the rhetorical device used would have most likely read the article in the first place: Monsanto Spreads Known Carcinogen on Town is effective all my its self. What you have after this are two polarized side ready to fight... a real shame when there is something that needs to be addressed.
