Robotics

Submission + - Ants used for mind-controlled robotic limbs

mr sanjeev writes: Australian researchers are reducing the divide between science fiction and science reality by bringing the development of mind-controlled robotic limbs a few steps closer. Even the most fertile science fiction imagination might not see a link between the behaviour of ant colonies and the development of lifelike robotic limbs, but that is the straightforward mathematical reality of research underway at the University of Technology, Sydney. The technology mimics the myoelectric signals used by the central nervous system (CNS) to control muscle activity. Artificial intelligence researchers have long used the complex interactions between ants to construct a pattern recognition formula to identify bioelectric signals. PhD student Rami Khushaba said 'swarm-intelligence' allows scientists to understand the body's electrical signals and use the knowledge to create a robotic prosthetic device that can be operated by human thought.
The Military

Submission + - The mobile Internet you'll be using in 10 years

mr sanjeev writes: After being plagued with project overruns and a scaling back of the final system, the US military's next generation satellite communications network is another step closer to reality, with completion of the payload module for the third and final Advanced Extremely High Frequency (EHF) satellite... If GPS and remote imaging (think Google Earth) have proven anything, it is that technology initially developed for military purposes, and extremely expensive for initial civil use, will eventually reach the point where it forms part of our daily lives without us ever being conscious of the massive investment to get to that point.
Hardware Hacking

Submission + - Australia, US engage in cyber warfare (computerworld.com.au)

mr sanjeev writes: Australia has launched Cyber Storm II a game in which five countries will engage in an international hacking exercise. The wargame is a follow-up to last years' Cyber Storm and will test the national security of Australia, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand between March 11 to 14. "The US defence department detects about three million unauthorized probes of its computer networks everyday. By playing out various real-time scenarios, we can see how we measure up and how we can improve," said Robert McClelland, Australia's Attorney General. http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id;1447007406;fp;16;fpid;1
