I think you misunderstand the definition of standing. Wikipedia on Trademark Dilution notes "Trademark dilution is a trademark law concept giving the owner of a famous trademark standing to forbid others from using that mark in a way that would lessen its uniqueness. In most cases, trademark dilution involves an unauthorized use of another's trademark on products that do not compete with, and have little connection with, those of the trademark owner." So Apple, because they have the trademark on iPod has standing to prevent trademark dilution.

JPEG XL has both true lossless and visually lossless pathways. The former gives 22 % savings over old school JPEG, the latter 65%.

It is more complex than that. While at highest (camera/art/high level e-commerce) quality old jpeg wins over WebP, at medium and low quality WebP wins with a margin. WebP lossless is a clear winner over other lossless codecs (including avif lossless) until Jpeg xl comes around.

JPEG XL design philosophy is built around robustness and least surprise. It should not require the use of flags to get decent performance from the encoder. The format is built in a way that it degrades naturally and consistently - although sharply when you move into the area of verynoticeable differences. The encoder quality parameter defines how many multiples you want of just noticeable difference.

JPEG XL is more efficient than AVIF and HEIF in the medium to high bits-per-pixel and less efficient in the lowest end. See: https://www.reddit.com/r/AV1/c... for a medium bits-per-pixel example. I'd never use low bits-per-pixel (0.1 BPP) to publish my images, so I like JPEG XL better. I believe half decent quality with progression is a better compromise for a publisher than going for crappy quality as the only option.

JPEG XL is more compatible with image encoding by having progression, responsive features and support for multi-threaded decoding. AVIF has better SSIM and PSNR scores but looks worse by a hefty margin.

I don't know about the UK, but in the US they measure unemployment using several different metrics. Some of those metrics are designed to capture things like discouraged workers. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks the following metrics labeled U-1 to U-6, but generally the press only talks about U-3:

U-1 Persons unemployed 15 weeks or longer, as a percent of the civilian labor force
U-2 Job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs, as a percent of the civilian labor force
U-3 Total unemployed, as a percent of the civilian labor force (official unemployment rate)
U-4 Total unemployed plus discouraged workers, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus discouraged workers
U-5 Total unemployed, plus discouraged workers, plus all other persons marginally attached to the labor force, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force
U-6 Total unemployed, plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor

I'm not sure that any of these capture your specific point, but the BLS does look at different aspects of the problem.
