Comment Car Insurance Rates are Too Low (Yes, Still) (Score 1) 179

I write this as someone who has two vehicles to insure but: car insurance rates are too low even with the increase in costs.

https://thewaroncars.org/2024/...

tl;dr: the costs of car crashes are disproportionately placed on non-drivers who are hit. If these costs were realized in the cost of car insurance, everyone's insurance would go up by a lot more.

If your first reaction to this is 'but I need a car to function in US Society', that probably tells you something about our society.

Wife of Harried Pirate Bay Witness Gets Buried in Internet Love 470

treqie writes "During the trial of pirate bay yesterday, a professor (Roger Wallis) took the witness stand. He told the court things that the prosecutors did not want to hear. The prosecutors then tried to discredit both him and his team's work in the area, as well as his title, it was a real spectacle. In the end, the judge asked if he wanted compensation for being there — he replied that he did not want anything, but they could send flowers to his wife. Many listening online heard, and began sending her flowers, from all over the world. As of this submission, the sum is over 40,000 SEK worth of flowers. There's even a Facebook group for it."

Julius Genachowski To Head FCC 177

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "The US President-elect, Barack Obama, has selected Julius Genachowski to lead the Federal Communications Commission. This appears to bode well for a forward-looking (or at least clued) Internet policy, since Genachowski is credited with running Obama's internet-based election campaign, and, according to 'Fierce Telecom,' 'has an impressive record working with technology and communications companies: He was Chief of Business Operations at InterActiveCorp; he's co-founder of Rock Creek Ventures, which currently backs 11 internet-based start-ups, and he's also served on the boards of numerous technology and new media companies, including The Motley Fool, Web.com, Truveo, and Rapt'."

Getting Started With Part-Time Development Work? 262

fortapocalypse writes "I'm getting paid a good salary as a Java developer and the hours are great. It is also very stable, which means something in today's economy, especially with a family to feed. However, I'm very unmotivated both because of the work that I do, which is boring, and because the organization I work for is highly political, disorganized, and lacks accountability. I've done what I could to try to change things at work and have pretty much given up on that. I want to go out on my own, either starting my own company or just working as a contractor doing Java development, but I'm not sure of the best way to get started, and my family needs the stability of my current job. I'd really like to start out part-time at 5-15 hours a week to use it as supplemental income (which my family could really use at the moment), but I really don't know where to start. I doubt many contracting agencies would be interested in a part-time worker. What would you suggest for someone in my position?"

Nine hours a week raiding to go from starting Gruul to killing Illidan in approximately nine months. Obviously I played more than that, but those were the scheduled times. Two raids a week, 4 and 5 hours respectively. That's still quite a bit of free time, but it isn't the part-time-job that some people are talking about. The raid leaders do put in more time than the raiders, and there's a fair amount of infrastructure to set up if you want to be successful, but again, much less than the stereotype.

A lot of people who raid spend so much time playing the game that they're not focused, they get sloppy, and they waste a lot of time. A friend of mine is considering leaving her guild because the raid leaders have this idea that they need to raid four days a week, four to five hours a session. And they're 'requiring' 75% attendance. They're just starting 25-man content and running three parallel Kara raids while they gear up. I told her to go find a guild that raids twice a week, knows what they're doing, and doesn't waste time.
