Well, the antarctic plate wasn't always where it is today. Ever heard of plate tectonics? In short: After breaking from Gondwana (southern part of Pangea), the antarctic plate moved south and developed a much colder climate. So no, just because there were trees once doesn't mean that there is no global warming, it means that there are other reasons why there were trees in Antarctica.

I work in a sheltered workshop in germany where we disassemble and sort no longer used computers. Most are workstations from companies, some are servers (think mostly 10+ year old CPUs etc., the newest I've seen was Ryzen 3 2200G). Normally we sort them into different categories (see approximate prices here), but inbetween there is something that can be sold as a used part, for example some weeks ago we found 1TB of 64GB-DDR4-ECC-RAM, which we sold in an auction. Now our workers aren't paid regular wages, but our workshop is part of the participation in working life program for disabled people who aren't able to work in the "first job market", but want to work nontheless (it is not forced work).

In some form maybe. But the young people will keep on using other services and just have facebook if they want to contact their parents/grandparents. Because you can`t really not accept a friend request from your parents or grandparents and once you do they can see all those lovely private updates from your friends about the last party and how you hooked up with that boy/girl or how you tried pot for the first time or...

And no, you are not protecting some fancy idea of freedom or some other bullshit, you are thugs, criminals, the scum of the world. The world would be better off if your country was nuked from orbit and every piece of it destroyed.

Considering that Apple signed a declaration of intent in 2009 (together with Nokia, RIM, Samsung and others) to use micro USB connectors from 2010 onward (at least in the EU), I'd wager that they won't stick to what they signed for a long time to come. No, what they actually did was releasing an adapter which let you use every other manufacturer's charger to charge an iphone.

A New Record For Scientific Retractions? 84

sciencehabit writes "An investigating committee in Japan has concluded that a Japanese anesthesiologist, Yoshitaka Fujii, fabricated a whopping 172 papers over the past 19 years. Among other problems, the panel, set up by the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists, could find no records of patients and no evidence medication was ever administered. 'It is as if someone sat at a desk and wrote a novel about a research idea,' the committee wrote in a 29 June summary report."

John Carmack Is Building a Virtual Reality Headset 118

An anonymous reader writes "John Carmack, co-founder of id Software, is using his spare time to develop a modern virtual reality headset. After purchasing such a device last year, Carmack became frustrated with how slowly the technology has progressed over the past twenty years. So, he decided to push it forward himself. PCGamer reports that he's been showing off his prototype behind closed doors at E3 this year, and has an interview with him about the problems with VR and the technical challenges he needs to overcome. They even get a look at the prototype itself, which is currently held together with duct tape."
