Looking at the trend lines, though, the rate of growth is _2x_ whatever it was prior to the announcement AND profits doubled. That's impressive no matter how you look at it.

Except that short-term profitability has DOUBLED since wages increases commenced (source). Did his plan then backfire?

I don't comment very often, but I read Slashdot almost daily. Look at my goddamn 6-digit ID — I've been coming here since the beginning. As others have pointed out, the comments ARE Slashdot. I clicked on Beta a few times and every time I had to switch back over to Classic. It's just not as easy to read and follow comments, nor as easy to decide which articles I am interested in reading. Listen to us. Others have given so many reasons why Beta sucks so I won't reiterate, but I had to comment to be counted with the hope that Beta dies.

The agency that collects music royalties in Canada on behalf of record companies and performing artists wants to charge web-based music sites that stream to mobile devices the greater of two figures: 45 per cent of the site's gross revenues in Canada or 7.5-tenths of a cent for every song streamed. Meanwhile, record labels are blaming the lack of online music services in Canada on piracy: 'Why would you spend a lot of money trying to build a service in Canada when Canadians take so much without paying for it?' said Graham Henderson, president of the Canadian Recording Industry Association, which represents major record labels."

The new drugs are called 'antisense' compounds, and they allow the immune system to attack the viruses before they can do enough damage to kill the patient. Travis Warren, research scientist at USAMRIID, said while the work is still preliminary -— the drugs have been tested only on primates — the results are so far promising. In the case of Ebola, five of eight monkeys infected with the virus lived, and with Marburg, all survived. The drugs were developed as part of a program to deal with possible bioterrorist threats, in partnership with AVI Biopharma."

mcgrew writes "The AP (via Yahoo) is reporting that Italian researchers can now cure blindness caused by chemical burns using the patient's own stem cells. 'The treatment worked completely in 82 of 107 eyes and partially in 14 others, with benefits lasting up to a decade so far. One man whose eyes were severely damaged more than 60 years ago now has near-normal vision.' Previously, this kind of injury needed either a corneal transplant or stem cells from someone else, both of which are plagued by problems with tissue rejection. Unfortunately, this only works for damaged corneas — so far."
