Correlation is not the same thing as causation.
- People who use sugar-free sweeteners may already be at higher cardiovascular risk because they have diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, or other conditions.
- People at higher risk may switch to sugar substitutes because they’ve been told to reduce sugar.
- Blood levels of the sweetener could partly be a marker of underlying metabolic problems rather than the direct cause.
- Lab or animal findings can suggest a mechanism but don’t prove causation in humans.
