Combine that with open source SOC designs its even better, but firmware runs on a chip, and many of these chips are the product of mostly semiconductor industries in China or Taiwan. Cisco or Netgear may have IP on designs and schematics, but they send these schematics to chip forges out East, and they will run volume batches for clients. Along the way, any number of unknown subcontractors get their fingers into any part of the manufacturing process, and you got a nice little hardware baked attack vector just waiting to be exploited.
