I dunno, thinking of interacting without having to move ones attention to a control element to make something happen is a good thing, and that is how it works with a scroll wheel too right? Given there may be fine point adjustments that could benefit from tiny incremental movements but I cant say I have come up against that in my current daily task use... which is general sysadmin work.

OSX Mountain Lion is starting to fall for this trap by hiding scroll bars. When I need to scroll, such as dragging the slider up/down, I can't even tell where it unless I first do a dummy scroll. This is retarded..

Just on that I use the touchpad with two fingers on my Macbook with no regard or awareness of what is now to me a redundant control, I don't need to know where the scroll bar is at, I just push two fingers in the direction I want to go. The absolutely effortless, intuitive and completely position agnostic (of my two fingers) behaviour of the touchpad is a marvel to use and one of the reasons I could not consider other meritorious hardware / software computing solutions... and the recent (Lion I think) flipping of the page scroll action direction was another good idea too... guts and design sense, and free koolaid. Sip... mmmmmm :)

Developing a new protocol, Hyperspeech Transfer Protocol (HSTP), the hope is to allow users to talk to the web and get a response. Without more explanation I'm hoping this goes about as far as the gopher web. "The spoken web is a network of voice sites or interconnected voice and the response the company got in some pilot projects in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat and the kind of innovations that people came up with were just mind-boggling, Gupta said. "

Bay Area To Install Electric Vehicle Grid 388

Mike writes "Recently San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland unveiled a massive concerted effort to become the electric vehicle capitol of the United States. The Bay Area will be partnering with Better Place to create an essential electric vehicle infrastructure, marking a huge step towards the acceptance of electric vehicles as a viable alternative to those that run on fossil fuels." Inhabitat.com has some conceptual illustrations and a map showing EV infrastructure, such as battery exchange stations, stretching from Sacramento to San Diego — though this is far more extensive than the Bay Area program actually announced, which alone is estimated to cost $1 billion.

'The last eight milestones were building up to getting a stable browser with an easy to use interface. We really want to get Fennec in front of as many people as possible and get feedback.' To that end, Fennec has been made available for the desktop on Windows, Mac and Linux."

cweditor writes: "A former Medco Health systems administrator was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $81,200 in restitution for planting a logic bomb on a network that held customer health care information, Computerworld reports. The code was designed to delete almost all information on about 70 company servers. This may be longest federal prison sentence for trying to damage a corporate computer system, although Yung-Hsun Lin faced a maximum of 10 years."

So Google said on Friday that it would increase the rate at which it is adding capacity to its web-based service. There's only one problem, Google's main competitors — Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo Mail — far surpassed Gmail this year with their own capacity."
