I dunno, thinking of interacting without having to move ones attention to a control element to make something happen is a good thing, and that is how it works with a scroll wheel too right? Given there may be fine point adjustments that could benefit from tiny incremental movements but I cant say I have come up against that in my current daily task use... which is general sysadmin work.

OSX Mountain Lion is starting to fall for this trap by hiding scroll bars. When I need to scroll, such as dragging the slider up/down, I can't even tell where it unless I first do a dummy scroll. This is retarded..

Just on that I use the touchpad with two fingers on my Macbook with no regard or awareness of what is now to me a redundant control, I don't need to know where the scroll bar is at, I just push two fingers in the direction I want to go. The absolutely effortless, intuitive and completely position agnostic (of my two fingers) behaviour of the touchpad is a marvel to use and one of the reasons I could not consider other meritorious hardware / software computing solutions... and the recent (Lion I think) flipping of the page scroll action direction was another good idea too... guts and design sense, and free koolaid. Sip... mmmmmm :)

Submission + - Google Groups Used to C&C Botnets (symantec.com)

oDDmON oUT writes: ""Maintaining a reliable command and control (C&C) structure is a priority for back door Trojan writers. ... Symantec has observed an interesting variation on this concept in the wild. A back door Trojan that we are calling Trojan.Grups has been using the Google Groups newsgroups to distribute commands." according to Symantec employee Gavin O Gorman.

He goes on to state that "The Trojan itself is quite simple. It is distributed as a DLL" and while the decrypted commands indicate it is used "for reconnaissance and targeted attacks" he does go on record as saying "It's worth noting that Google Groups is not at fault here; rather, it is a neutral party. The authors of this threat have chosen Google Groups simply for its bevy of features and versatility.""

A Hypothesis On Segway Hate 487

theodp writes "Admit it, IT is ingenious. Also, IT is surprisingly effective for certain uses, including real cops and mall cops. And if you tried IT, you probably smiled to yourself. So why all the Segway hate? Paul Graham looks into The Trouble with the Segway and offers a hypothesis about what prompts people to shout abuse at Segway riders: 'You look smug. You don't seem to be working hard enough.' Not that someone riding a motorcycle is working any harder, adds Graham, but because he's sitting astride it, he appears to be making an effort. When you're riding a Segway you're just standing there. Make a version that doesn't look so easy for the rider — perhaps resembling skateboards or bicycles — and Segway just might capture more of the market they hoped to reach."

Bay Area To Install Electric Vehicle Grid 388

Mike writes "Recently San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland unveiled a massive concerted effort to become the electric vehicle capitol of the United States. The Bay Area will be partnering with Better Place to create an essential electric vehicle infrastructure, marking a huge step towards the acceptance of electric vehicles as a viable alternative to those that run on fossil fuels." Inhabitat.com has some conceptual illustrations and a map showing EV infrastructure, such as battery exchange stations, stretching from Sacramento to San Diego — though this is far more extensive than the Bay Area program actually announced, which alone is estimated to cost $1 billion.

Google Vows to Increase Gmail Limit 309

An anonymous reader writes "Google claims that people are devouring capacity with photos and other attachments on its Gmail e-mail service faster than the company can add to it at its current pace. So Google said on Friday that it would increase the rate at which it is adding capacity to its web-based service. There's only one problem, Google's main competitors — Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo Mail — far surpassed Gmail this year with their own capacity."
