Well, in the name of excercise, I rode my bicycle for commute the day before yesterday.

The problem, I think, with commuting via bicycle on a nearly summer evening, is probably the immense danger of swallowing mouthfull of bugs in the process. I mean, I havn't been in china for a while, so I have almost forgot the Important Rule of Living in the Countryside: besides bodies of water, there are swarms of insects at dusk. And believe me when I say that there are quite some bodies of water here - with all the patches of land filled for rice-irrigation, everywhere falls under the "insect swarms Xing" zone.

So, I highly recommend against riding bicycle in such situations. Which honestly made me wonder, though - how does the hordes of school-kids and commuting people deal with this problem? I am sure I am not the only one who has almost ate two flies and have about the same struck my eye during a 16km commute. I can't even count the general "something hit my face" events.

Nothing much else; my mind has been mostly blank as of late. weekday and all...

  • I'd ride more often to work (>2 times a year) but I've got two bits with it. One is that my commute takes me either through a very-bad ghetto, or 8-9mi out of the way, and two is that I live in South Florida. It's like 80 degrees when you get up, 110 at noon, and 90ish when you go to leave, and I don't have a shower at the office.
  • I used to live in Hyogo, and I too had to pass many "tambo" on my journey home. When the heat cranked up to the high 30's (celsius), it was like riding around in a giant sauna filled with bugs. They'd stick to everything, and I remember likening my face to a windshield after a long journey through the countryside... The only thing you can do is get some good wrap-around sunnies and learn to hold your breath for long periods of time!
    • "a giant sauna filled with bugs" is such an accurate description...

I was thinking maybe it would be halfly bearable if I got a real helmet - but I figured that I might actually have to carry windex around on commutes =)

Not to mention, the rainly season is starting, and well, it rains a lot these few days...
