Journal lateralus's Journal: The wife needs an upgrade 5

The wife's GNU/Linux box was getting old, and I mean "500MHZ and a 10GB HDD" kind of old. I ordered up a new board from MSI, Athlon CPU, Spire "Rock" heatsink, 256MB 400Mhz DDR RAM, Nvidia Geforce 4 MX video, 80GB HDD and a new case with more fans and front side USB ports.

After slapping it all together and loading it up with Fedora Core 1 I stepped back and thought:

"Damn! Now her box is better than my box!"

The wife needs an upgrade

  • Upgrade your box!
  • I was expecting soft tissue surgery :)
  • Up until about 2 months ago, MY main system was a PII 400 running Mandrake 9.1

You'd be surprised how well it works until you get used to faster.
    • Before my present Athlon I worked on a 333MHz Celron with 1 Gig of RAM. I was really happy and would not have switched but for my older sister buying me a new board+CPU. Now that I've gotten used to my Athlon I could never-ever-never-no-way go back.
  • You seriously need an upgrade. ;-)

I mainly follow the radeon line of cards, but the GForce4 is supposed to be pretty good isn't it? Don't limit your system with a lack of memory. Consider NWN or ET for games.

Granted if you are not playing games, 256 should do you for mozilla/OO.org and such.

They are relatively good but absolutely terrible. -- Alan Kay, commenting on Apollos
