Comment iMessage? (Score 3, Informative) 202

"iMessage" is a message transport. The app is "Messages". The document from Apple specifically says "SMS": it does not mention either Messages or iMessage. While it's possible that Apple leaves iMessages unencrypted on the device, it would be surprising given how much trouble they go through to protect then in transit. So while this document doesn't explicitly say iMessages are safe, it also doesn't say they're vulnerable.

It's big enough to carry everything you've mentioned, but no bigger than necessary. It comfortably distributes the weight when fully loaded, and is unbelievably durable. I've used mine on a daily basis for four years, including several cross-country and international trips, and it still looks new. Worth every penny. Highly recommended.

Feed Techdirt: Enthusiasm Over Kijiji Has A Familiar Ring (techdirt.com)

This week, eBay announced that it would launch a domestic version of Kijiji, its free classified ads service, which inevitably draws comparisons to Craigslist (25% owned by eBay). The company has a big challenge cut out for itself, particularly considering the loyalty that Craigslist has among its users. But analysts are already excited about Kijiji's potential. In a research note, UBS analyst Benjamin Schachter talked up the potential size of the market and argued that the site could drive usage of PayPal and Skype, as users look for mechanisms to communicate and engage in transactions. Does that sound familiar? It's exactly the same logic behind the Skype acquisition, that usage of it would be boosted by eBay's buyers and sellers. That doesn't seem to have occurred to any significant extent, however. There's nothing wrong with eBay trying to capture a chunk of this market, but any excitement about major profits or synergies seems awfully premature.

Submission + - Nature - 50 years of the Multiverse Interpretation

chinmay7 writes: "
Fifty years ago this month Hugh Everett III published his paper proposing a "relative-state formulation of quantum mechanics" — the idea subsequently described as the 'many worlds' or 'multiverse' interpretation. Its impact on science and culture continues. In celebration, a science fiction special edition of Nature on 5 July 2007 explores the symbiosis of science and sf, as exemplified by Everett's hypothesis, its birth, evolution, champions and opponents, in biology, physics, literature and beyond.
Read the excellent selection of articles (and quite a few related scientific papers) from this special edition of the Nature magazine here."

Two days ago HP came into my office and gave a 2 hour roadmap presentation to let us know what will happen to Risk/Alpha over the next few years.

Well, Risk and Alpha are going away, and Itanium is the way of the future for HP-UX and OpenVMS. What was interesting was what they told us about the forthcoming Intel processors - the entire Alpha team was hired by Intel and the next gen intel chips will use the Alpha style switchless mesh architecture. This style architecture removes roadblocks inside the box -- no more intermediaries. Your data takes a straight line to its destination.

In other words - it connects processors directly to one another to render true linear scalability. This differs from other architectures in that there is no traditional bus, and you can add processors, memory and I/O capacity in a Lego block-like fashion.

They also mentioned they will be coming out with quad core in 2007.

The limited number of scenarios where the IO will actually be both More efficient and cost effective doesn't seem to bode well for the future of this version... pretty high cool factor though, I admit, but just pricey enough to make you think before you leap... What is the Erricson version going to cost?

This is an old concept. A friend of mine had this same idea years ago in Grad School. We were creating strategic techhology concepts and his digital pen was The JOT! Check it out: annoia.com. Go in, click on The Jot movie...

Get rid of the expensive paper! Make it do a few other things that might actually make my life easier! Then I'll spend the money.
