Submission + - Developers fork Mandriva Linux, creating Mageia (mageia.org) 1

Anssi55 writes: As most of the Mandriva employees working on the Linux distribution were laid off due to the liquidation of Edge-IT (a subsidiary of Mandriva SA) and the trust in the company has diminished, the development community (including the core developers) has decided to fork the project. The new Linux distribution, named Mageia, will be managed by a not-for-profit organization that will be set up in the coming days. There are already many people that have decided to follow the fork, but the people behind it are still welcoming any help offered in the various tasks related to establishing the new distribution.

Submission + - Can a garbage heap save us from global warming?

davide marney writes: "In a Washington Post opinion piece, Hugh Price argues that using a decidedly low-tech solution to sequestering excess carbon — making piles of agricultural waste — is better than any "green" technology. Sometimes the easy answer is the right answer. After all, that's how coal forms, and we know that works pretty well."

Submission + - 4chan DDoS Takes Down MPAA and Anti-Piracy Website (torrentfreak.com) 1

ACKyushu writes: Say what you like about 4Chan, when they want something done, it gets done. Following a call to arms yesterday, the masses inhabiting the anonymous 4chan boards have carried out a huge assault on a pair of anti-piracy enemies. The website of Aiplex Software, the anti-piracy outfit which has been DDoSing torrent sites recently, is currently down having been DDoS’d. They are joined in the Internet wasteland by the MPAA’s website, also currently under huge and sustained attack.

Submission + - UK ISP spots file sharing loophole, implements it (aaisp.net.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: As well as taking an active part in OFCOM's code of obligations in regards to the ill-conceived Digital Economy Act (The UK three strikes law for filesharers). Niche ISP Andrews & Arnold have identified various loopholes in the law, the main one being that a customer can be classified as a communications provider. They have now implemented measures so in your control panel you may register your legal status and be classed as such.. Has a rushed law been easily defeated or will the copyright lobby simply push further (and probably just as ill-conceived) laws through now to correct it?

Submission + - Apple Voids Smokers' Warranties (consumerist.com) 4

Mr2001 writes: Consumerist reports that Apple is refusing to work on computers that have been used in smoking households. "The Apple store called and informed me that due to the computer having been used in a house where there was smoking, that has voided the warranty and they refuse to work on the machine, due to 'health risks of second hand smoke'," wrote one customer. Another said, "When I asked for an explanation, she said [the owner of the iMac is] a smoker and it's contaminated with cigarette smoke which they consider a bio-hazard! I checked my Applecare warranty and it says nothing about not honoring warranties if the owner is a smoker."

Apple claims that honoring the warranty would be an OSHA violation. (Remember when they claimed enabling 802.11n for free would be a Sarbanes-Oxley violation?)
