I live in a rural area in the south. I currently pay ~$60/mo for 1.5 Mbps. Yes, 1.5 in 2020. That's the fastest available connection speed available from the one provider in my area. If StarLink was in my area I would eagerly pay the $500 and $99/mo.

Personally, what I do is bring a burner and use that to join the network / go through the captive portal. Then I plug in my travel router which spoofs the burner's mac address and automatically connects to my VPN. My devices then connect to that router.

Android is open source, however Google Services and Play Store are not. They are proprietary. This is why if you flash something like LineageOS you get a very usable system but there's no play store. Apps that depend on Google Services don't work unless you flash something like OpenGapps which add the proprietary apps and services.

There is an open source project called microG that's implementing the proprietary services and there are LineageOS builds that include it. Aurora Store gives access to Play Store without actually using google.
