Journal johndiii's Journal: Terminated 20

So, I got in to work early this morning, ready to get some last things done before code freeze. My manager comes in and says that he wants to talk to me for a few minutes. But he doesn't go to his office, but down towards the HR department. Yup. The Bad News.

To be fair, there have been some issues. I'm not sure that I really fit into the development environment. I had been working in a commercial software environment for thirteen years, and took this job when I was laid off last year. The job is (was) internal software development for an investment firm. This is different from the commercial model, particularly in that there is much more pressure to get the features in and fix bugs later. I didn't check things in until I was pretty sure that they would not cause problems in other areas. This was apparently a problem, performance-wise. There were also communication issues. I thrive on knowing what is going on, and I was not getting that. Even things that had a fairly direct bearing on my job were things that I discovered by accident. You need to go after information, but it helps to know the questions to ask.

There are some people there that will be less than pleased, but, well, that's no longer my problem.

Anyway, if anyone is looking for an experienced (14+ years) Windows C++ software developer in the Dallas area, I'm on the market. Extensive knowledge of C++ technology, including templates (heavily used in my latest job).

Sorry, but I can't quite muster the spirit for International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

  • sorry to hear (read) your news. best of luck to you finding something else.

i just survived a round of layoffs. there are so many empty cubicles here. it's pretty dreary today. i don't know why, but i feel a little guilty for making the cut.
  • That's all.
  • Hope something comes up soon, especially if you want to stay in Dallas.

Monster and CareerBuilder have positions overseas for your skills all of the time, if you get interested in that.
    • Thanks. We've been in Dallas for 19 years now, so we're pretty settled. My wife has a business, and my daughter is just starting her senior year in high school. Moving would have to be a desperation option, at this point. I am going to hit those sites as soon as my resume is updated, though.
  • got your email first. :(

i will write more later, but for now hang in there, and be glad that your kid is grown. We need a slashdot-wide job networking program...

Seriously... Anyhow, good luck John. Hope you find something soon.

I heartily agree...I'm sometimes looking for good freelance PHP+MySQL coders and don't know where to look...for that matter a freelance pool with a rating system would rock.

Sorry about your job, John. Best of luck.

      Cheers,

      • OK, then. How about this [slashdot.org]? I created an account, so that the journal can provide a point of contact. I think that we can use the message notification system to our advantage, though it isn't possible to monitor the messages in another user's journal, only the journal entries themselves. Please post any comments or suggestions either here or there. I intend to manage this by making regular JEs in that account, as traffic demands.

      • I will do stuff for you on my own time for free. Don't expect promptness if you take me up on that, however. Can always use more references.

And good luck John, may the JobCenter succeed.

Be careful what you ask for. ;-)

I usually need people to do things like CMSes and online shops -- not something you'd want to just hack together on a free evening, I'll wager. ;-)

At the moment I don't have anything concrete, but if you're interested in principle, and have the time to invest, feel free to drop me a line (my e-mail addy is in my profile).

          Cheers,

  • Hey John, is your email actually at amilost.com?
I sent an email to you there...
    • Yes. I registered the domain a couple of years ago for my daughter, but she has never put anything up there. So I use it, mostly for e-mail. Having a domain gives you a lot of flexibility. I'll probably post me resume there, eventually. You should have gotten at least one e-mail back by now. Thanks very much for the referral.
  • In finding a new job. Not wanting to scare you but the market is bad, even here...
    • Thanks for the good wishes. I am more than a bit apprehensive, but hopefully things will go OK. Probably a good thing that I'm not prone to depression, because I'm really stressed out right now.
  • As one who was laid-off this year, I am sorry to hear that you have joined the unempolyment ranks. It sucks.

I hope you can take advantage of this time off and maybe do something fun and relaxing.

And I hope you find a job very soon after you do something fun and relaxing. ;)

    Take care.
  • I hope you find something. I've changed my .sig to point to the jobcenter.

Aye, a tale such as yers would take the wind out of anyone's sails.

A sudden becalming can be rough. Coffers and stores get lean, and ye may have to live on stale hardtack a while and face unpleasantness such as sending out the boats with rowers to tow your vessel. But keep yer eyes on the horizon -- bleak times are when yer best able to see that faint outline of a treasure-laden galleon: hull down, with only its tops'l

  • I'm soo sorry to hear that, John. Hang in there big guy. You'll find something soon, I'm sure of it.

On a lighter note, try thinking that maybe this is a blessing in disquise.
Kinda like..."Some of God's greatest gifts, are Unanswered Prayers".

    • With a couple more days of water under the bridge, that's the way I'm seeing it. This gets me out of a situation where I was unlikely to thrive in the long run. I think that I had been vaguely unhappy with it for a while. The financial aspects of it, though, would have made it very tough to leave. So I get the chance to expand my horizons once again.

And I get a chance to help some others out as well. Check out the JobCenter link in my sig. This is fun.

A conclusion is simply the place where someone got tired of thinking.
