...what? A vacuum?

There's a church a couple blocks down from my apartment complex. First Baptist Church of Richardson. I was on my way out for a haircut today, and I noticed a couple of police cars on the street a block or so south of the complex. Then, when I was in sight of the church, three more in the parking lot in back of the church. Coming around the curve, it is clear that something is going on at the church. The parking lot is full of cars, including... more police cars. And a couple on the street. I hadn't heard about a Richardson officer being killed, but... Then I reached the the front of the church, and out on the sidewalk...

"God Hates Fags"

Ah, that explains it. A visit from Fred Phelps' psychos. Must be a military funeral. I was surprised by the sudden depth of anger that I felt. It drained quickly, though - those people are sad.

So I keyed up Bí Thusa Mo Shúile, a beautiful Gaelic version of Be Thou My Vision by Maire Brennan (lyrics here) (thank you, Koria). Something that they cannot understand, trapped in hate.

God Hates...

  • I cannot understand. I don't see how someone can convince themselves that they could possibly be doing God's will, acting like that.
    • Agreed. They have no idea how much damage they are doing - fire and brimstone is never the way to spread the Gospel...

And God doesn't hate anyone - only sin.

And even then, hate isn't the right word - a more accurate statement - God will not tolerate sin.

Even if they're not spouting fire and brimstone, messages they may still be doing more harm than good. Just being judgemental about someone's behavior that you see as against God's will can make them uncomfortable, and flee from you.

        • From Romans, ch.1

"and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, (AX)men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error."

There is a more important context here, but, still, there is more in the Bible condemning homosexuality than just Leviticus.

          • So, the Apostles change their mind and say that eating non-Kosher is ok, but continue to assert that homosexuality is wrong?

What if the Apostles had asserted that homosexuality was ok? Again, this is an act that was viewed no less abhorrently than eating non-Kosher. Why should homosexuality be any different, or why should Kosher be treated any different?

That would appear so. Believing that the Pauline epistles are of divine origin is a fundamental tenant of Christianity. I'm not a fundamentalist Christian, so I don't hold that belief. I'm merely stating that support for the viewpoint that homosexuality is a sin is present in the New Testament as well as Leviticus.

              • If they had, there would probably not be any culture wars today regarding the issues. However, Paul explicitly condemns it.

What about issues then that the Apostles neither reaffirmed, nor released? We've already established that Paul reaffirmed homosexuality, and he released us from eating Kosher, but there are still a number of laws that he made no comment about at all.

What state do these sit in? Since we have no new testament guidance on if they are still abhorrent, or if they're allowed, what are we to

I don't know...I'm not a theologian (or a religious type). I believe that the real question is whether homosexuality is considered a sin (like adultery), or a 'purity' law (like eating Kosher).

I don't think the Bible is clear.

      • Interestingly, Christ himself talks about hell more than any other person in the bible. Perhaps he knows something the rest didn't?

Anyways, more importantly than watering down Christianity, the best method to share the gospel is the truth. Sometimes the truth is difficult for people, but to try to sugar coat the gospel is to lie about it. Now, that doesn't mean you have to be mean or cruel when sharing, but remember to tell the truth.
  • beyond being hateful invective, really ought to be actionable as outright slander.
  • god hates all the stupid people.
  • when I see things like this. Gosh, John, why or why did you post this? I want to start ranting and screaming. Do you know what I keep hoping? I hope that these religious fanatics are actually right about the "rapture." I hope that one day all of these bigots/assholes/hypocrites that use religion to spew hatred just disappear one day to leave all of us "sinners" well enough alone.

    • I posted this because they became particularly real to me today. It's one thing to see them in the news, it's another to see them two blocks from your home. I thought that I had, well, absorbed the impact, and consigned them to the dustheap - but seeing them in person brought my anger right to the surface. And yet that anger was as pointless as their lunacy - if somewhat more well-founded.

And with the song, my harmony was restored. The phrase "be thou my vision" has a very Daoist flavor to me, as well a

i think the thing that really makes them sad is that they cultivate negativity as the identity of what they set out to do with their lives. so much energy is expended focusing on hate and anger rather than emotions that actually uplift people at all.
