Which Distro For an Eee PC? 466

An anonymous reader writes "I've got an Eee PC 1000HD, and frankly, I can't stand XP. I know it's odd, because I actually like Vista, but XP is such a giant piece of crap on here that I struggle to use it day-by-day. Anyway, my question is this: which Linux distro should I run on it? Plain Ubuntu just doesn't have driver support. I tried Ubuntu-eee, which, to put it bluntly, does not work for me at all (slow, terrible battery life, even worse interface). I've heard that Jaunty Jackalope is going to have better netbook support, but that's all the way in April! Is there a distro out now that will free me from XP's terribleness without being terrible itself?" Getting wireless working on an Eee PC (though in my experience imperfectly) with stock Ubuntu is possible; for me it took some googling, though I've been told with great enthusiasm that it actually works "out of the box." What distros are you running on your netbook, and what problems do you find?

France Seeks To Push 3-Strikes Law Across Europe 265

quanticle writes "As you may recall, France previously threatened to cut off broadband access for file sharers. However, after lobbying by the public, the legislation failed in the National Assembly. Now, the government of Nicolas Sarkozy is trying to revive the the measure by pushing it as an amendment to the pan-European Telecoms Package. This amendment has the potential to impose 3-strikes across Europe, not just in France."

Aaah good old POKE loops and DATA statements. I wrote my first proper machine code routine using those, a message scroller and worked out the relative jump offsets (and updated them as I edited the code) using that method. Having spent hours on it and meticulously checking every jump, it ran first time with no bugs (crashing the speccy and needing to reload it all made it worth being meticulous about checking things - quicker to spend 5 mins checking than to have to reset and reload your last save from tape and apply any recent edits again).

Then I got an assembler, and then a Plus D (great little disk drive interface), then UniDOS for it and started hacking it a bit... I wrote a few cool routines for demoscene demos, and a rather fast little .wav file player using the stack (47kHz 4-bit sample player).. Been about 7yrs since I wrote anything proper on it though.

Linux Passes the Microsoft WGA Test 338

Wil writes "Here's a good one for the Linux fans -- running Wine on Linux and attempting to download a Windows Genuine Advantage protected file from the Microsoft website works just fine. It seems that Bill Gates has a soft spot for Tux after all, or at least isn't bothered about him downloading updates."
