Submission + - Red Hat open sources SPICE desktop virtualization (techworld.com.au)

laxl writes: Linux vendor Red Hat has open sourced the Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environment (SPICE) virtual desktop protocol it acquired last year with Qumranet, which used SPICE for its own commercial desktop-virtualization product, called SolidIce. SPICE can be used to deploy virtual desktops from a server out to remote computers, such as desktop PCs and thin-client devices and it similar to other rendering protocols used for remote desktop management like Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or Citrix's Independent Computing Architecture (ICA). SPICE supports rendering virtual instances of Windows XP and Windows 7, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. According to Red Hat, SPICE has advantages over other protocols in that it can dynamically customize desktop instances to fit specific operating environments.

My advice would be to set yourself apart as much as possible. There are just so many conferences out there, and so much competition for the scarce training budget funding, you need to do something to make yours stand out. Maybe you need to think about a niche market or a more targeted audience. If you pick a broad topic like "Java", you will be up against the big boys with the reputation and history to back it up.

I personally view my coveted conference as the time to get caught up on the "cutting edge". See what the newest research and development is. More importantly, to meet peers in my field and exchange battle notes. My advice: stand out and make it worth it to me.

Just curious, but has anyone else taken a step back and wondered *why* the USAF needs to build satellites more quickly? In reality, they are probably just planning ahead for when giant satellite killing lasers litter the ground and they start dropping like flies (or whatever else the planners have come up with). If this trend continues, will we launch fleets of these things? We already have a pretty large cloud of sattelites orbiting the earth.

Interesting question. Moore's Law originally spoke to the number of transistors on a single chip. So you could argue that we would have to make bigger chips to keep up. However, I believe the intent of Moore's Law is in the computing power. So, once we have reached asymptote on the size spectrum, I wouldn't imagine an end to an increase in power.

Submission + - The Perl 6 Advent Calendar

An anonymous reader writes: Larry Wall wasn't joking when he said that Perl 6 would be ready by Christmas, perhaps not this Christmas but that hasn't stopped a group of people (including head Rakudo developers Patrick Michaud and Jonathan Worthington) from putting together an Advent Calendar, featuring one cool Perl 6 feature everyday until Christmas. Topics currently covered include how to get and build Rakudo (the most actively developed and progressed implementation of Perl 6) and the new Metaoperators. For those wondering when Perl 6 will be finished; Rakudo will be having it's official 'production release' (dubbed Rakudo Star) April 2010.

Submission + - "Lawful spying" price lists leaked (cryptome.org) 1

ogaraf writes: Wired has a story about how the site Cryptome leaked the price lists for "lawful spying" activities of Yahoo and other companies, and subsequently received a DMCA takedown notice from Yahoo. The documents are however still online and in them you can learn for instance that IP logs last for one year, but the original IPs used to create accounts are kept since 1999. The contents of your Yahoo account are bought for $30 to $40 by law enforcement agencies.

Hey Sycraft - good points. I would actually like to believe this, but I think it's more complex than that. Have you ever taken a look at Al-Jazeera? I'm always amazed at how completely biased that outlet is. I'm not saying that CNN/FOX/whatever doesn't have any bias, but at least they make a pretense of trying to present both sides. With such an unbalanced stream that coming not from the government (?), you have to think that the bias will continue. How could it not?

I can't believe I used my last mod point before I saw this. Wouldn't have made much difference, as you are a coward.

It's amazing the things we feel we can say online behind the cover of anonymity that we would never say in person. Could someone with a mod point please -1 Troll this guy?
