If you are in the market for an ereader, I implore you to search for kobo horror stories, my favorite is over on getsatisfaction.com. Typically, a user has a problem with their kobo (very common). They contact customer support, who are friendly and completely worthless. Customer support tells the customer they are escalating their ticket to level 2 support. Wait. Wait more. Complain. Wait more. Complain more. Repeat until fed up. Stay away from Kobo. I am waiting for the day they oust their worthless CEO or go out of business.

Badgers Digging Up Ancient Human Remains 172

One of England's oldest graveyards is under siege by badgers. Rev Simon Shouler now regularly patrols the grounds of St. Remigius Church looking for bones that the badgers have dug up. The badger is a protected species in England so they can not be killed, and attempts to have them relocated have been blocked by English Nature. From the article: "At least four graves have been disturbed so far; in one instance a child found a leg bone and took it home to his parents. ... Rev. Simon Shouler has been forced to carry out regular patrols to pick up stray bones, store them and re-inter them all in a new grave."

Icelandic Company Designs Human Pylons 142

Lanxon writes "An architecture and design firm called Choi+Shine has submitted a design for the Icelandic High-Voltage Electrical Pylon International Design Competition which proposes giant human-shaped pylons carrying electricity cables across the country's landscape, reports Wired. The enormous figures would only require slight alterations to existing pylon designs, says the firm, which was awarded an Honorable mention for its design by the competition's judging board. It also won an award from the Boston Society of Architects Unbuilt Architecture competition."

Story seem too good to be true? It probably is, at least according to writer Peter Kafka. Even so, Jay Leno and Good Morning America have already reached out to "Jenny."

Attacking Game Consoles On Corporate Networks 79

A pair of security researchers speaking at DefCon demonstrated how video game consoles, which are becoming increasingly common break room or team-building toys, can open vulnerabilities in corporate networks. "[They] found that many companies install Nintendo Wii devices in their work places, even though they don’t let you walk into the company with smartphones or laptops. (Factories and other sensitive work locations don’t allow any devices with cameras). By poisoning the Wii, they could spread a virus over the corporate network. People have a false sense of security about the safety of these game devices, but they can log into computer networks like most other computer devices now. In the demos, the researchers showed they could take compromised code and inject it into the main game file that runs on either a DS or a game console. They could take over the network and pretty much spread malware across it and thereby compromise an entire corporation. The researchers said they can do this with just about any embedded device, from iPhones to internet TVs."

My wife and I were discussing cord blood banking with our third (and presumably last) child. The up front cost was a stumbling block, but we were blessed (luck?) to run into the CBB rep at the doctors office. She talked to us, and gave us a 'family & friends' coupon that brought the up front cost down to $500. We did it, and now pay somewhere around $300/year for ongoing costs, but you can reduce that through referrals. For us, in our situation, at that time, we feel like it was a good decision. Maybe it will never be used. Maybe all diseases will be cured. Maybe one of the other kids will never need it. But maybe some day it will help someone, be it our child, me, my wife, or a total stranger. We had the funds, the information, and the wherewithal do it, so we did. I have never woken up at night and thought "gee I wish I hadn't done that". For us, it was the right decision. Look into discounts, payment plans, or other sources if you really want to do it. If not, I hope it works out also.

Toren Altair writes with this excerpt from a story at The Space Fellowship: "NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit communicated via the Mars Odyssey orbiter today right at the time when ground controllers had told it to, prompting shouts of 'She's talking!' among the rover team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. 'This means Spirit has not gone into a fault condition and is still being controlled by sequences we send from the ground,' said John Callas of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., project manager for Spirit and its twin, Opportunity."
