Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Ask Subset Of Slashdot: Huh? 25

I ordered a book from amazon.de last week. It's a classic in computer science literature: "Operating System Concepts" (aka "The Dinosaur Book") You know, for laid back reading on the beach and so ;-)

Anyways, it got delivered yesterday and there is a huge sticker on it saying "Wiley International Edition - Restricted! - Not for sale in North America". The fucking thing is *printed* in the US, so why can't you sell it there? Anybody have any ideas?

  • It talks about Gay Marriage. Our tender American ears aren't ready for such a discussion. :-)
    • Uhm... Yeah, I forgot... Both dinosaurs and operating systems are gay! How could this have escaped me? ;-)
      • Hmmm...this book talks about non-Microsoft operating systems, correct? The US has banned it for being gay. Slashdot trolls say all non-MS OSes are gay. Conclusion: Trolls have taken over the US government!!! RUN FOR COVER!!! ;-D

That's the way it goes. I would buy the "restricted" international versions of my textbooks from amazon.uk because they're less than half the price that they are here. North Americans are only allowed to buy expensive copies of the exact same book. :^)
    • If shipping costs were acceptable, ask your friendly shark to buy it for you and then ship it to you. Paying him back over PayPal (if that is possible, I don't know if that is possible)

I suspect however that shipping will cost more than the US markup.

      • Textbooks here, new, cost well over $100 USD. Sometimes as much as $200 USD.

I doubt shipping will be but a fraction of the mark-up. ;-)
      • Order summary from the UK flavor of amazon to me:

Items: 24.46 Pounds (stupid slashdot won't display a pound sign...)
        Postage & Packing: 6.98 Pounds

        Total before VAT: 31.44 Pounds
        VAT: 0.00 Pounds

        Order Total: 31.44 Pounds
        (approx. $57.35)

Still almost half of the US price...
I'm not sure how much it would cost you to ship it to us USAians, but it definately should be less than $50...

I already offered last time she was trying to buy a textbook, 'coz Amazon UK don't charge much to ship to me... being in the UK! But she apparently had another means of getting it. The offer still stands, though.

That's what I thought, until I found out just how expensive US textbooks are. In some cases, it's 4-5 times as much! Insane...

    • Yeah, BUT when you go to sell it back they give you the used international version price for it. That is if you are lucky and they didn't slide the professor a C-note to change the edition of the text being used next semester so they can offer you $5. :-)
  • It probably costs less than the US version, so they don't want US people buying the cheaper international version. What is the ISBN number? How much did you pay?
  • WTF are you thinking?

Do you want the Pentavarit* coming down on us?

Jesus man! Get a hold of yourself.

On a more serious note, I'd have to say it's because they can get more money out of us 'Mericans that way.

    The bastards.

*the Gettys, the Rothchilds, the Queen, Colonel Sanders, and Prime Minister Blair are the 5 ranking members of the Pentavarit.

    • But...but... I didn't know *sniff*

On a more serious note, I'd have to say it's because they can get more money out of us 'Mericans that way.

Ah, but that is because that every other country outside the US is a 3rd world country where people barely have money enough for buying food. I should know, I will now have to be hungry the rest of the month because I wanted to buy a book.

    • "Colonel Sanders? Colonel SANDERS?"

Yes, Colonel Sanders SMART ARSE. He puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly!!! Ooooh and his weee beeeedy eyes!
    • the colonel hasn't been a member since he went tits up. things have been somber at THE MEADOWS since his death.
  • Maybe it's a conspitracy by Big Business and the Republicans. You see, if anyone in America found out how to write an Operating System properly, the Emperor's lack of clothes would be revealed, so to speak. Microsoft's business would collapse over night...

    Look out! Fruitbreak imminent!

    • Hmmmm... I think it is a plot of the republicans: making education so expensive that only the rich can educate themselves.

This -of course- benefits Microsoft because only the rich can buy their software, thus closing the circle. Microsoft must thus support the Republicans.

All the others stay uneducated and watch College Football while drinking beer and never bothering to vote. (Or voting republican because their pastor said so)

One good reason why computers can do more work than people is that they never have to stop and answer the phone.
