Journal janeowit's Journal: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallel-U2! 5

I read this article today that might even get Smoochy to head to church*. It's a story about Episcopalian churches that have incorporated U2 songs into church services. And they gave them the funniest name ever- U2Charist services! There just aren't enough eucharist puns these days. I guess it's growing in popularity because 150 churches in 15 states now hold U2Charist services. I'm kind of intrigued. I keep trying to think of songs that might work, but I'm not that well versed in the U2 oeuvre and all I can think of are "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Where the Streets Have No Name" which don't seem to fit very well.

*just kidding, nothing could make that guy go to church

  • Please tell me you are kidding. As if hymns weren't bad enough... sheesh.
  • Funnily enough, I'm in the middle of planning an English-language service for All Saints Day tomorrow -- including picking out hymns and whatnot, coming up with a Litany of the Saints, that sort of thing. And weirdly enough, the idea of using modern pop songs did cross my mind, including U2 (not seriously, but the idea did occur to me).

Yeah, the idea of U2 being using in a service ought to drive ole Smooch batshit crazy! Muahahahahahaha! ;-)

So, Smooch, when can we expect you in the pews? :-D

    Cheers,

Shall I bring the sledgehammers or will you? I had a job demolishing the guts of buildings in college--that was always fun. :) Ooh, I just had a Floyd-esque image of an exploding church with "Welcome to the Machine" playing. Heh. ;) Bitter, ME??? Naaaaah.

It's fairly well known that Bono is a Christian. He said in a recent interview that he admires atheists for not being afraid to admit there's nothing out there. Fairly enlightened lad... . ;)
  • "I Will Follow" springs to mind immediately. I'm sure there are others.
  • "Gloria". To quote the song's description from the National Review's slightly more hilarious than sad list of the 50 greatest conservative rock songs, "Gloria", number 6, is "a rock song that's about faith and whose chorus is in Latin". "Yahweh" also seem like it could be pertinent.
