Journal janeowit's Journal: Where would you be? 25

I have been listening to the new Mason Jennings steadily since I bought it less than a week ago. And some of the new type songs are beginning to catch on, and the old type songs have cemented a place in my heart. One of those traditional Mason type songs is "Which Way Your Heart Will Go". In which he wonders:

Where would I be right now if all my dreams had come true? Deep down I know somehow I'd have never seen your face. This world would be a different place. Darling, there's no way to know which way your heart will go.

So where would you be right now if all your dreams had come true? And like Mason, are you happy with the way things turned out?

I'm going to skip my childhood dreams of marrying a pilot/lawyer named Bob Troyer, or being a princess or whatever. So senior year I wanted to be a pharmacist, and was dying to get that four-year scholarship to St. Kate's. And if I had, I never would have transferred schools, and joined the sorority, and met my best friends, the Somes. Otherwise, I'm still on track, I graduated in 4 years, I'm in Pharm School, and I have a bunny. I don't have that rockstar boyfriend I always dreamed about, but I'd trade him for good friends any day.

Where would you be?

  • I admit it, I'm a music elitist. If you've heard of them, I don't like them. If they are on the radio, I hate them.

But if you had a rock star boyfriend, you'd hate him. Kind of self limiting, eh? :)
    • No, I think anyone in a band is a rockstar. So my boyfriend would be in a band you'd never heard of. You know, one of those really good, but under appreciated bands who never tour. That's the kind of rockstar boyfriend I want.
  • Shawn Hlookoff [myspace.com] and Lee Coulter [myspace.com]. Obviously they're both not your type of music, but I like them anyway... ;^)
    • You are definitely right about that Hlookoff kid, that is a new artist I probably hate. Lee Coulter, on the other hand, has some redeeming qualities. The music for the song "Booty Voodoo" is actually interesting guitar work and really catchy but then he has to go an ruin it with the stupidest lyrics this side of "My Humps". I think you have convinced me, that you aren't, in fact, me, after all.

I just spent 20 minutes finding 2 artists, and mine are way better than yours. What do you think of Josh Pyke [myspace.com] or th

I don't mind Booty Voodoo (the reason I checked his site out) but the rest I could easily live without. And you're right - the lyrics are right up there with "My Humps" and "Milkshake" for depth...

  • on the ground, having failed in an X-Prize attempt...

that said, i dream better than i used to, and i don't qualify for the role of test pilot, so the future's still up for grabs as far as i'm concerned.
  • Apparently when I was six I wanted to be a doctor and a race car driver. All I have left to get to that dream is get through medical school and learn how to race a car. I think I gave up on the doctor part when I found out how much school I would have to go through after getting out of high school (what, you mean like 8 MORE years after high school????) Nothing like a little reality to make my lazy nature kick in.
    • Yeah, don't forget doctors need at least three years of residency. So that's at least 11 additional years of school after graduation from high school.
That's one of the nice things about pharmacy. You have four years of undergrad, four years of pharmacy school (the last of which is all rotations), and then you can actually start working. Then there are optional two year residencies, which you only need for some jobs. But most people are done in 8 years.
  • i tell ya, you gotta check out the douglas fir [thedouglasfir.com]. they are a local boston band, been around for about 6 or so years... and have gotten some notoriety.

yes yes, i am biased, my long-time friend is the bassist (the best bassist i've ever heard), but really, there music is very cool, very moody, just damn good.

    • I was right clicking to open the link in a new window, and I wasn't quite finished reading the last sentence, and for a minute I thought you said their music was very cool, very moody, just like me. Which would have been an odd thing for you to say.
Also, I really I like their sound. Yeah, good stuff there. I love getting good recommendations.
      • well yeah, yer pretty cool. moody? aren't we all? :)

heh, i keep pestering my friend when the new record is going to come out. they've been recording it, well, it seems like forever. they've been using hi-n-dry studios, mark sandman's studio... which funny... is about .7 miles from where we live in cambridge. yeah, we are just that cool :)
  • My dreams of being insanely rich and marrying a wonderful woman and having a family and travelling a lot would make me happy, except it's hard to find a wonderful woman when you are insanely rich. I'm no where CLOSE to insanely rich, and I still have trouble finding a girl who isn't out for my money.

MY dreams in chronological order were: astronaut, lawyer, doctor, programmer. I'm a programmer. Since acheiving that dream, I have a new dream. My new dream job is "lottery winner". However, I guess I sho

    • Well, say that right out of high school you inherited all the money you needed for the rest of your life, and got married and had a family. And could travel all the time with them.
You said that would make you happy, but would there be anything that you would miss out on? Anyone that you wouldn't have met, any great experience you wouldn't have had? Anything that would make you choose your current path over your dream life?

It's easy for me to say that I would go with my non-dream life, because other than the
      • Heheh... I could tell you some stories of people I wouldn't have met if I hadn't left the job in TN for the job in Cincy that never materialized. That was an interesting 6 months, and although I wouldn't have chosen to be unemployed that long, I wouldn't have met Black TL who's a very good friend. So yes, I think I would have been happy with my dream life, but I would have missed out on some great friendships and experiences. I wouldn't change it, but if I had never met these people I wouldn't know I was
