Google Publishes Censorship Map 154

Entropy98 writes "Google has released a censorship map showing how often countries around the world request user information and censor services such as Youtube. The US government asked Google for user information 4,287 times during the first six months of 2010. Information on China is conspicuously absent."

Comment It's not the language, it's the understanding (Score 0) 565

Learning a new language is a matter of semantics and punctuation, not logic. I'm a firm believer that once you have an understanding of logic, adapting those skills to other languages is a relatively simple process. A for loop, logically, is the same in C, Java, BASIC, Visual BASIC, C#, AGOL, FORTRAN, Pearl, Ruby, COBOL, or any other language.

Submission + - Internal Microsoft Email about Life at Google (wordpress.com)

Anonymous Coward writes: "An interesting perspective on Google, from an internal email sent around Microsoft. Basically an interview that provides analysis about how Google compares to Microsoft from an employee perspective. Included are suggestions for what Microsoft might copy in order to stay competitive in the job market and criticisms of Google's "college kid" atmosphere."

Submission + - Huge Residential Wifi Mapping Database Revealed

Talaria writes: "An enormous database of home wifi routers and their locations has been revealed after the Internet Patrol did some digging following AOL's recent announcement of their new "Near Me" service which allows AIM users to see which of their instant messenger buddies are geographically near them. The database, containing the unique IDs of more than 16million wireless routers and their locations, has been compiled by AOL partner Skyhook Wireless which claims to have mapped the majority of residences in both the U.S. and Canada."

Submission + - EFF forces DMCA abuser to apologize

destinyland writes: "The EFF just announced victory over a serial abuser of DMCA copyright notices. To set an example, their settlement required Michael Crook to record a video apology to the entire internet for interfering with free speech. He's also required to withdraw every bogus DMCA notice, and refrain from future bogus notices, never contest the original image again, and take a remedial class on copyright law. He'd attempted to use flaws in the DMCA to censor an embarrassing picture of himself that he just didn't want appearing online — but instead the whole thing backfired."

Submission + - EU Commissioner slams closed music ecosystems

Nonu writes: EU Commissioner for Consumer Protection Meglena Kuneva has come out against DRM lock-ins like Apple's iPod-iTunes combo. Kuneva said she believes the tie-in that keeps music bought from the iTunes Store from playing on MP3 players other than the iPod was unreasonable. '"Do you find it reasonable that a CD will play in all CD players, but an iTunes song will only play on an iPod?" asked Kuneva. "It doesn't to me. Something must change."' The EU is in the midst of an effort to harmonize its consumer protection laws, and long with the question of DRM tie-ins, it is also looking at mandating "cooling-off" periods whereby customers could "return" downloaded music.

Submission + - Microsoft Quietly Releases Windows 2003 SP 2

Misterfred22 writes: Microsoft quietly released 32-bit Windows 2003 Service Pack 2 today for download. You can download it here. Be sure to read the very long list of fixes, too. The 64-bit edition is still showing as a release canidate on their site.

Submission + - Sport has nothing to do with obesity in children

xiox writes: "The UK government is planning to stop funding a study to understand obesity in children. The study fits children with accelerometers to measure how much energy each child uses in a day by moving. The results are very surprising. Those children who do sports at school do not burn more calories than those who don't. Furthermore there is no correlation between body mass index and the number of calories used! The results are very interesting, suggesting that genetics and diet are the main reasons for childhood obesity, not sport. The UK government is trying to increase the amount of sport in schools."
