SimCity 4

  • I'll let you know as soon as I pick up a copy... in May when the Mac OS X port is finally released. :P

Sometimes I really miss the old Maxis days.
    • Don't we all... I was never a big Mac user, but the first time I used a mac was to play SimLife, which, though not as good as the SimCities, was quite a fun game...

Now, if only some other slashdottian has played the game and sees my sig, maybe we can both find out. If not, I look forward to your thoughts when you get it in a month. :)
      • I remember playing the original SC on a Mac Plus. The whole game fit on a single floppy, too. With a System Folder to boot! (pun intended)

        Those were the days...

  • It is pretty good. There are some quirks which are likely patched by now. On larger maps later in the game there's a large slowdown on my machine (dual 1.8, 512m, geforce 2).

Plus there's no random map generator, which decreases replayability quite a bit. (I expect one will be added/patched/done by 3rd party soonish though)

There is alot *more* stuff, and alot of things added to make the game deeper. In sc2k you'd end up just repeating the same procedure over and over again, until you got arco's and then re
    • large slowdown on my machine (dual 1.8, 512m, geforce 2). - Well, that doesn't bode well. I wonder if I can convince my wife that I need to upgrade...

It's a bit of a bummer that they didn't include a random map generator. Is there still a way to make a custom map, or is that gone too?

More difficult is good, seeing as I (and most SC addicts) eventually figuered out the money making methods for SC2K and then lost interest...
And goodies are, of course, always good.
      • Oh, yeah there's a map editor included, and (I'd assume) quite a few user maps now. The other... odd thing is that maps are BIG. Kinda like region maps, with other smaller maps on it. The cities in the region can be connected and interact via import/export and commuting. It's designed that way for multiplayer I'd assume, though the game was shipped without multiplayer support (to meet a deadline, and will be patched in later)

        • Acually the region play has good uses in single player mode too. If you put your dirty industry and power generation in one city and the residential and comm in an neigboring city the similings are much happer.

You can setup exports/imports between them for water, garbage, and power. But you still have to maintain a balance bacause you can't transfer funds bewteen cities.

This version just adds another layer of strategy for those advanced players who have been playing since the dos days.
          • except you can't readily switch between the cities, meaning to keep such a balance you need to stop, and save the game, and load the other, then play a little bit and switch back.

            Terribly annoying.

*ahem* and some of us have been playing since the Amiga days thank you very much : ]
    • It's not really random, but there is a new map generator [ea.com] that gets information from the USGS.

      • I dunno about EA... this is what I got when I went to their site -

        Browser Incompatible

Thank you for your interest in SimCity 4! Unfortunately, you are currently running a browser version that is incompatible with our site. You will need to upgrade your browser to the most current version to get the most out of the SimCity 4 site.

But the map generator sounds like it would add enough newness to the game to keep it Looongterm playable..

Whenever a system becomes completely defined, some damn fool discovers something which either abolishes the system or expands it beyond recognition.

Working...
