If the lenders and credit agencies tell end customers what factors penalized or improved their credit score, then this credit score sabotage won't be as effective. This kind of thing does happen, so it is important to be transparent so that the issue can be easily appealed and the loan reviewed.

Yeah I totally agree with your logic behind a blanket no-formal reference policy. It saves a ton of headaches from managers who don't know the HR basics. Normally a company will only be sued for giving a good reference for a poor employee when it can be shown that the company materially lied about the employees standing. This has been shown in cases where Employer A wanted to sabotage Employer B so therefore Employer A will giving a glowing reference to his competitor about an atrocious employee.

Submission + - Area 51 No Longer (Officially) a Secret 2

schnell writes: The first-ever declassified story of Area 51's origin is now available, thanks to a Freedom of Information Act filed years ago by George Washington University's National Security Archive. The (only lightly redacted) document is actually primarily a history of the U-2 and A-12 ("Oxcart") spy plane programs from the Cold War, but is remarkable for being the first-ever official unclassified acknowledgement of the Area 51's purpose and its role in the program. Interesting tidbits include that the U-2 program was kicked off with a CIA check mailed personally to Lockheed Skunk Works chief Kelly Johnson for $1.25M; a U-2 was launched off an aircraft carrier to spy on French nuclear tests; and the U-2 delivery program itself was actually done under budget, a rarity for secret government programs then or now.

Why is everyone so convinced it is the law? It is only the law in about half of the states. In the other states they are free to to cash you out or send you home empty handed. In his case they may not have even been required to give him PTO for the two week period.

Like the parent said there is no federal law that compels a company to cash out your vacation pay. About half of the states do not require a company to cash out the vacation pay. So no, you don't know what the hell you are talking about - at least 50% of the time.

Robotic Penguins 118

Corporate Troll writes "Robotic penguins were unveiled by German engineering firm Festo this week. Using their flippers, the mechanical penguins (video) can paddle through water just like real ones, while larger helium-filled designs can "swim" through the air. The penguins are on show at the Hannover Messe Trade Exhibition in Germany. Each penguin carries 3D sonar which is used to monitor its surroundings and avoid collisions with walls or other penguins."

This isn't even taking account for bulk ordering or vendor contract deals. Also the preinstalled 'apps' subsidize the cost of windows.

I don't know if cost is really such a big factor, especially considering the support for linux will have a hefty price tag as well. Consider training, help desk software, FAQs and documentation, and etc when thinking of the cost of linux. The only incentive manufactures have are which versions will sell more?
