The idea that there is no room for private insurance with a public option is ludicrous. I live in Australia where we have Medicare. This allows anybody to get treatment for most things but has a very long queue for elective surgery. The private insurance companies allow you to use the private hospitals to jump the queue in the public version. Also private health cover in Australia will allow you to charge for 'extras' such as Physiotherapy, Chiropractor and alternate medicines (acupuncture etc). The government has also introduced a levy on high income earners that they have to pay towards medicare if they do not have insurance. I am not sure how the USA is going about the introduction of public option but the public and private options can definitely co-exist.

How do you know he has not done this already? My wife and I just installed a set of solar panels and to assist in electricity reduction we have ensured our house is fully insulated, have also had our roof restored and painted lighter colour (we live in a hot climate) and are now saving to install double glazed windows. With the Australian governments 8000 AUD rebate we calculated that with the savings in usage it was still a good return on investment. Additionally in Australia the government has mandated a 40c/kW payment by electricity companies (so I get more tax dollars back) and the company I am with will pay the same as the charge me (19c/kW) on top of that. Also we worked out that it changes your usage habit we turn everything off at home during the day except for the fridge.

Homemade PDF Patch Beats Adobe By Two Weeks 238

CWmike writes "Sourcefire security researcher Lurene Grenier has published a home-brewed patch for the critical Adobe Reader vulnerability that hackers are exploiting in the wild using malicious PDF files, beating Adobe Systems Inc. to the punch by more than two weeks. Grenier posted the patch on Sunday with the caveats that it applies only to the Windows version of Adobe Reader 9.0 and comes with no guarantees. Also, PhishLabs has created a batch file that resets a Windows registry key to de-fang the hack by disabling JavaScript in Adobe Reader 9.0, giving administrators a way to automate the process."

Cornell University FPGA Class Projects for 2008 112

Matt writes "The new crop of Cornell University ECE 5760 projects are now online. Some really cool projects, as well as the previous two years' worth of projects." Since it's mid-December, many other schools, too, have either just let out or are about to; can you point to any other online collections of cool technical projects?

Because that is how the Australian filter started as a optional porn filter at ISP level. It then got additional filters to get voted through parliment which included a two tier level first tier mandatory for "illegal sites" and a second optional tier for "child unfriendly sites". Unfortunately the mandatory site list keeps getting longer. I know US politics is different but it is noted that you do get a lot of ammendments to your bills too.
