The idea that there is no room for private insurance with a public option is ludicrous. I live in Australia where we have Medicare. This allows anybody to get treatment for most things but has a very long queue for elective surgery. The private insurance companies allow you to use the private hospitals to jump the queue in the public version. Also private health cover in Australia will allow you to charge for 'extras' such as Physiotherapy, Chiropractor and alternate medicines (acupuncture etc). The government has also introduced a levy on high income earners that they have to pay towards medicare if they do not have insurance.
I am not sure how the USA is going about the introduction of public option but the public and private options can definitely co-exist.
