Journal grub's Journal: I've been bad.. 18

Too weird, I could have sworn I saved this last night..

Anyhow, this message is asking me about my current sig:
  • Excellent Karma but I can't moderate because I've been bad..

Do tell. Would you mind writing a journal entry about this? I'm in the same boat, it would appear.

There isn't much to say, really.

For years (user #11606!) I always received mod points. Suddenly the mod points stopped. If memory serves it was about the time I started trolling more than normal both as an AC and not. Many of these were about the despot Michael "Ahab" Sims.

I asked about this ~6 weeks back and received the following from Rob Malda:

  • "Don't worry about it. THere are a dozen criteria for moderation. Most likely you read to much :)"

That could very well be, I do read /. a lot. In fact I subscribe as I tend to read in bursts when I'm not overly busy. However I don't read any more than I used to, unless they've drastically changed the mod system something is amiss.

It may be that I mod'd a post in the infamous censored post thread. anti-slash.org claims:

  • Slashdot's editors secretly banned each and every moderator who modded the post up from moderating again on slashdot.

Whether that is true or not is anyone's guess.

Of course this isn't Real Life and Slashdot is their baby; they can do whatever they want with it. It would be nice if they told people what was going on though.

It seems that free exchange of ideas around here only applies to code, not the thinking behind how they run their sandbox.

  • Boy, a lotta trolls responding to this journal entry...

As mentioned in my original comment, I'm in the same boat. I have Excellent karma, but I haven't bee able to moderate for many, many months. I used to metamod every day, in hopes of getting mod points again. I don't bother any more.

I sent an email to Malda detailing this, including my speculations about what happened. And he sent me an email similar to yours:

Most likely your reading habits our outside the bounds for "Normal"

    slashdot readers. You

    • Loosing moderation privs... its alot like getting your right hand chopped off. :P

I'm in the same boat too. I have excellent karma and I also misguidedly was doing metamoderation on a daily basis, but I haven't seen mod points since Spring. Although my name might indicate otherwise, I'm not a troll either. In general most of my posts are pretty normal or attempts at being humorous. I post a hell of a lot more "touchy" stuff as AC when I really want to break out of the mold. And yes... I do occasionally
  • Check out this post [slashdot.org], which claims that /. does not allow you to really be anonymous when you post AC. They track login, they track IP, etc. The post even has a scientific way of verifying its claim.

    I guess I'm a troll, then.
  • I'm a fan...
Your feedback is important to me.

What do you think of my latest deed?

    Funny no?

    • Why are you being modded as a troll? The Google link which leads to the lovely Ms. Tubgirl? The mods are so lame.
      • Well it was scored 5 for at least 30 minutes and over 1 for several hours. It was 0 this morning. -1 at noon.

And yes the google link and the fact that it's a antislash database repost.

Still I think it's hilarious - especialy some of the responses. Haven't laughed so hard in a while.

Oh and btw my main account hasn't seen a mod point in some time...which is kinda why I started trolling in the first place.
  • I read no more than 3 - 6 times a day. No refreshes.

This entire year I got 5 mod points...dunno why.
    • I was thinking of metamodding everying unfair.

      Why?

I dunno. Piss off the mods, lower thier karma, lower the pool of 'viable' mods, increase my chances if any?

      Does this sound logical?
      • Sounds like a good plan. Until, of course, /. starts with meta-meta-moderating :)

Actually the mod system says that a moderator should concentrate on modding up not down. However too many people disagree with a posting and hammer it with a downmod.
