Idealism is not dead: The profits from the sale will go into a foundation that is going to help with projects about freedom of speech, freedom of information and the openess of the nets. I hope everybody will help out in that and realize that this is the best option for all. Don't worry - be happy!

You're actually correct in that the human eye cannot tell the difference between 1080p and 720p at a certain distance.

I read an article many moons ago when the format war was still in high gear on Audioholics (link) which was titled "1080p and the Acuity of Human Vision". It's an interesting article because it cuts through all the marketing and gets down to the science of HD and if it ACTUALLY matters.

A good summary line from the article would be:

"Put bluntly, from 8 feet away while watching a 50 inch plasma TV, the human eye is generally incapable of reliably distinguishing any detail finer than that shown on a true 720p display!"

Most "quality" differences people see between the formats (unless they're sitting in the first row of their home movie theater) come from richer colors and cranked up contrast and brightness on sales displays.

No?

Apple is a hardware company first and a software company second. They want you to buy their hardware so you can use their software.

Hardware first, Software second.

If you didn't have to buy their hardware to use their (free) software.... how do they even make money?

So no, Apple should not open source anything (and nor should they!)

I am one of your support customers. Thing is, I'm not comfortable saying much else because we were told the 10th was the magic day, and it leaked 2 days early. To be clear, the patched BIND worked the way it's supposed to, and I'm sure it's going to work fine for most customers. With the news that you have patched versions that address the issues with heavily taxed servers, probably almost all of them. We jumped the gun because that's what we do. : ) And I'm sorry I was critical on BIND. It is still the industry standard, and the original daemon that made it possible to get rid of enormous host files. There's a degree of comfort in running *the* DNS daemon, and we were doing it even though my organization is decidedly anti opensource. That speaks volumes.

Which PHP5 Framework is Your Favorite? 138

matt_j_99 asks: "With all the talk about Ruby on Rails, I've been thinking about PHP frameworks. Ruby on Rails looks pretty cool, but frankly, I don't want to learn a new language. It seems that with all the slashdot discussion about RoR, somebody always makes the valid point that PHP is not a framework. But with PHP5's, Object Oriented features, a standard framework might emerge. Prado, Carthag, BlueShoes, and PHITE all seem like interesting frameworks. What PHP frameworks have you used in your applications? What were the pros and cons of each? Which framework do you think will have the best chance of long-term viability and maintenance?"

How long before we have more active Grey IC - Tar Babies (similar to today's honey pots), Tar Pits, Blaster - and ultimately, Black IC - seeking out the source of the intrusion and in turn, destroying the origin of attack?
Is that name serious? "Tar Babies"? I ask because it is also a racial slur intended as a play on the dark skin of black people. An older slur, but nonetheless still used (my redneck former boss used it frequently.)

Call me a p.c. asshole if you want, but if you grew up in the south you'd understand... I'm sure this use of the name has nothing to do with that, but yikes. That's a horrible choice.

Journal Journal: Sunday morning 1

The sound of the landscapers working on the lawn awoke me. I could tell it was still very early, because my alarm hadn't even gone off yet. The thin beams of light peircing the blinds fell blue against the floor. I slowly forced my grogy-body into a sitting position, leaned back against the wall, and split the blinds apart to get a good look at the weather.

Journal Journal: A myriad of emotions 2

I was wandering down Main Street yesterday morning, I believe that I was shopping for shoes, when I caught a glimpse of a very attractive "surfer chick". Light brown hair, athletic build, short form-hugging O'Neil swimming trunks.

I paused, stared at the slowly crawling clouds in the sky, and thought to myself: "Man, it would be fucking sweet to drag my sweaty ball sac across her pretty virgin face".

I then turned to my girlfriend and smiled.

Journal Journal: I got big old balls 5

I got big balls
Big ol' balls
Big as grapefruits
Big as pumpkins
Yes sir, yes sir
And on my really good days
They swell to the size of small dogs
My balls are as big as small dogs

Well, it ain't braggin' if it's true
Yes sir, yes sir
It ain't braggin' if it's true

Back when he was a young man
Back when he was Cassius Clay
Before he fought too many fights
And left his brain inside the ring
