The melting of sea ice itself doesn't cause a rise in sea level because the mass is already pushing on the ocean.
However, sea ice reflects sunlight and reduces the warming of sea water at the edge of the continent. Sea ice also acts to pin ice on land, reducing the rate at which ice slides off the land into the ocean. A reduction in sea ice is generally understood to accelerate the melting of ice on shore.
