For those who don't have access, here's an open link to the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/0... The melting of sea ice itself doesn't cause a rise in sea level because the mass is already pushing on the ocean. However, sea ice reflects sunlight and reduces the warming of sea water at the edge of the continent. Sea ice also acts to pin ice on land, reducing the rate at which ice slides off the land into the ocean. A reduction in sea ice is generally understood to accelerate the melting of ice on shore.

It is truly reprehensible that they're seeking to destroy all abject truth around their favorite political talking points. It's so sad that so many people are proud to believe anything they are told, and that many will cheer these closures. Production of concrete results contrary to tightly held personal beliefs is exactly why science is not political, and should not be run as a political exercise.

While I am also concerned by the 51st state rhetoric, that seems less likely than a much more problematic possibility. Recently Trump has been telling Canadian officials that previous treaties defining the US/Canada border are invalid. My concern is that through executive action he will redefine the border to annex portions of Canada, similarly to what Russia has done in Ukraine. After the stupidity with renaming the Gulf of Mexico and various mountains, it seems shockingly possible.

Investing in early stage companies using their product is incredibly logical. They're well placed to evaluate the likelihood of success for their investments, and they can help to nurture the nascent technologies which use ML acceleration hardware. This gives NVIDIA deep insight into how their tech ecosystem should be evolved, and enables use cases that should bring other players in these industries from hardware platforms like x86 and arm/risc to GPU accelerated hardware platforms, growing their core market. If just a handful of their investments work out, this will make them far more than the investments cost. Considering the present NVIDIA valuation, snapping up ownership in small startup companies is a great bargain.

I agree entirely with your comment. Comparing a MacBook pro that can run windows with windows laptops makes sense, but apple has moved away from that compatible approach. While I bemoan the windows lock on much of business and engineering software, it's a reality many are constrained by. There are lots of Linux/Mac os options now, but it's still a very constrained ecosystem. It doesn't matter how fast my cell phone or M1 based MacBook air is, as I can't use it for a lot of my work. It doesn't make sense to directly compare in FLOPS, because I can't use the power at all under certain platforms.
