so are cats

from: http://www.messybeast.com/emoticat.html

"SO - DO THEY HAVE FEELINGS?

Cats and other animals have feelings. However their feelings must be interpreted in the context of their own physical needs and their own environment. They have a more limited range of feelings than humans and their reaction to environmental stimuli is different to humans, but they show many responses indicative of emotions.

Although I have used the term "programmed", to reduce cats to little more than pre-programmed machines with a finite set of available reactions would be wrong. Those who deny that cats, or other animals, are entirely lacking in feelings do this to justify their own treatment of animals rather than through any true understanding of those animals. Rather than attribute full human feelings to cats, it is better to understand how cats perceive the world and to adjust our behaviour to accommodate their physical and emotional needs as best we can."

Walt Mossberg Reviews Ubuntu 642

sciurus0 writes "Mainstream technology journalist Walt Mossberg recently reviewed an Inspiron 1420N with Ubuntu installed by Dell. Citing problems such as an oversensitive touchpad and poor multimedia support, he suggests that 'from the point of view of an average user, someone who wouldn't want to enter text commands, hunt the Web for drivers and enabling software, or learn a whole new user interface' Ubuntu isn't a good choice compared to Windows or OS X."

Feed What's In The Water? Estrogen-like Chemicals Found In Fish Caught In Pittsburgh' (sciencedaily.com)

A study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine suggests that fish caught in Pittsburgh rivers show evidence of estrogen-like activity, indicating that chemicals that mimic the female hormone may be making their way into the region's waterways. The study also found that when the researchers treated breast cancer cells in culture with fish extracts, the cells grew at increased rates.

Using Two Monitors Makes You More Productive? 602

Double Vision asks: "In my job, I work with several software applications at once. I find that constantly switching back and forth wastes a tremendous amount of time and causes me to lose focus. My video card supports two monitors, so I found a discarded monitor in my office and hooked it up. This has made it much easier to do my job. However, we are getting ready to go through an equipment audit, which means I will likely lose my additional monitor unless I can justify keeping it. How can I make this case? Is anyone aware of studies that support my claim that two monitors makes me more productive?"

Feed Russia's GPS-challenging Glonass system nearing completion (engadget.com)

The New York Times reports that the Russian Space Agency is set to launch eight navigation satellites before the end of the year, which would nearly complete the company's ambitious Glonass system, leading to a global launch sometime in 2009. That's when the country hopes it'll begin to pry folks loose from their dependence on GPS-based devices, with Russian President Vladimir Putin himself reportedly pressing scientists to make their system better and cheaper than GPS. As The New York Times points out, Russia isn't the only one looking to take on the current GPS monopoly on satellite navigation, with both China and the European Union also working on their own competing systems, although neither are apparently as far along as Russia's.

Feed FCC Cancels Flight Of Cell Phones (techdirt.com)

As was previously expected, the FCC has decided not to lift a ban on the use of mobile phones on airplanes. It says there's still insufficient evidence that in-flight use, even with onboard base stations, wouldn't interfere with networks on the ground. But it's also likely the Commission was responding to the overwhelming amount of public comment against lifting the ban. The FAA is still examining the issue of how phones and other electronic devices interfere with planes' navigational and communications equipment, but without FCC approval, those results don't really matter. It's likely that the technical issues can be overcome -- but the fact remains that plenty of people don't want to get stuck in the confines of an economy-class seat next to somebody jabbering away on their phone for hours at a time.
