Comment Save on processes - pay on infrastructure (Score 1) 109

Every time I see blockchain proposed to replace existing processes I see few remarks on the investments required to set up a "shared, distributed database that spans multiple organizations".

I'm pretty sure the regulators will require these databases to have a high level of security (which is built in, blockchain adepts will say), a high level of resilience (per bank, not as a 'distributed' system). This will drive up cost.

On top of that, a distributed database of investment transactions must be able to handle the load of the many millions of such transactions per day. The data will be replicated, which will require tons of storage. And the systems will need to be fast, tons of servers required.

So, I'm not so sure this will happen in the near future.

Submission + - Hubble Discovers Quadruple Lensed Ancient Supernova (discovery.com)

astroengine writes: Astronomer Patrick Kelly, with the University of California Berkeley, and colleagues report this week about four different routes light from an ancient supernova took to reach the Hubble telescope after being deflected around an intervening elliptical galaxy. The phenomenon is known as an Einstein cross. “Basically, we get to see the supernova four times and measure the time delays between its arrival in the different images, hopefully learning something about the supernova and the kind of star it exploded from, as well as about the gravitational lenses,” Kelly said in a statement. The supernova will appear again in the next 10 years, as its light takes different paths around and through the gravitational lens.

Submission + - The Programmers Go Coding Two-by-Two, Hurrah? 1

theodp writes: The Wall Street Journal reports that pair programming is all the rage at tech darlings Facebook and Square. Its advocates speak in glowing terms of the power of pair programming, saying paired coders can catch costly software errors and are less likely to waste time surfing the Web. 'The communication becomes so deep that you don't even use behind anymore,' says Facebook programmer Kent Beck. 'You just grunt and point.' Such reverent tones prompted Atlassian to poke a little fun at the practice with Spooning, an instructional video in which a burly engineer sits on a colleague's lap, wraps his arms around his partner's waist and types along with him hand over hand.

Submission + - Google Launches Hurricane Isaac Site (ibtimes.com)

redletterdave writes: "Google Crisis Response, one of Google's thousands of active projects that merges various Google tools like Maps, Docs, Forms and Earth, posted a new webpage on Monday dedicated to Tropical Storm Isaac — soon to be Hurricane Isaac — in an effort to disseminate helpful information about the hurricane's path, its forecasted track, and how local residents can stay safe during this emergency situation. Google's Crisis Map for Hurricane Isaac allows the user to set up and see public alerts from weather.gov, flood gauge forecasts, surge zones, evacuation zones and routes, barrier resources and relevant YouTube videos for each impacted area."

Submission + - Apple is forced by EU to give 2 years warranty on all its products (standaard.be)

dsmalle writes: Apple has adapted its warranty to cover 2 years, under pressure of the European Union and after European consumer organisations sued Apple.
This only for products bought in Apple Stores or via Apple's website: the European law forces vendors to give 2 years warranty whereas the manufacturers only have to provide for one year.

Comment diesel dust (Score 1) 1141

My mercedes C200 uses 5.3 liter per 100 km, as is the common way of expressing fuel consumption in Belgium. This is equivalent to 44.3 MPG. But it's a diesel.
Now some here are pro using more (and better) diesel in the States, but beware: studies have proven that diesel motors are one of the major sources of fine dust in the air. Of course, the better part of it is from the big transport lorries, but still this has spawn laws to make particle filters standard on all new cars etc.

Vim 7.2 Released 106

sanguisdex writes "After fifteen months of work: a brand new Vim release! This is a stable version. There are many bug fixes and updated runtime files. The only new feature worth mentioning is support for floating point. Upgrading from a previous version is highly recommended: a few crashing bugs and several security issues were fixed. For the details see the announcement or go directly to the download page."
It's funny. Laugh.

XKCD Inadvertently Causes Googlebomb 221

MrCopilot writes "As I noted yesterday (and was joined by many others)... in an offhand observation xkcd has singlehandedly changed a small section of the Internet. Changing the results from a Google search for "Died in a Blogging Accident" from 2 to (at this writing) over 7,170 in a little more than 24 hours." If you aren't reading xkcd, you're missing out.

How to Say Goodbye to Old Hard Drives? 337

An anonymous reader writes "I'm wondering if anyone else out there has a stack of old hard drives sitting around and doesn't know what to do with them. I always remove the hard drives of my parents' and friends' computers before they recycle them or get a new computer, so now I've got a whole bunch sitting around. One, I'd like to dispose of them and know that whatever data was there is gone, but before that, I'd like to hook them up, one by one, and scan them to make sure there's nothing vital there worth saving. Some are years old and may be totally dead for all I know, but is there a good system for hooking up a hard drive as an additional device, perhaps via USB? And what's a pretty good way to ensure that someone else won't pull them out later on and find usable data?" Well to start with you could always use your hard drives to make electricity or create a decorative wind chime. There are also many different options to ensure that your data doesn't fall into the hands of the enemy. What other suggestions can folks come up with?
