The Wing Commander Series, another example of Hollywood getting even the most simple details wrong.

Game: Kilarthi are big space cat aliens. Humans fight them.
Movie: Kilrathi are weird hairless things. Pilgrims complain about stuff.

Another series lost to the morass of bad creative decisions.

The example of Doom as a movie has never ceased to amaze me.

Game: Phobos. Open a gate to hell. Demons.
Movie. Mars. Resident evil plot. Mutants.

How friggin' hard is it to keep one of the most simple plots in existance intact? Not only that, but if they'd kept it at least they would have differentiated themselves from the Resident Evil movies. Hell, Doom even had some novels go on and they got pretty tripped out and sci-fi'ish from the second book on. Work with what little established canon you have hollywood!

If the Doom movie had been called "Zombies on Mars" I would have accepted it. The fact that they tried to ride on the coattails of an infamous and iconic video game and didn't get a ridiculously simple plot right belies the problem with Video Game Movies: Hollywood thinks slapping a video game title onto crappy movies will make them rich.

Hollywood is not the only one at fault here though; why do game companies who have invested so much money into establishing these brands allow their products' images to be tarnished by such horrible movies? For every Uwe Boll film there was someone at a game studio signing away the rights to a game's likeness and name. These people should be held accountable as well.

Human-Animal Hybrids Fail 554

SailorSpork writes "Fans of furries and anime-style cat girls will be disappointed by the news that attempts to create human animal hybrids have failed. Experiments by British scientists to create embryonic stem cells by putting human DNA into cow or rabbit eggs had raised ethical concerns, but the question of how we would treat sub-humans will have to wait until we actually figure out how to make them."

Interesting Uses For a USB LED Screen? 403

Hogwash McFly writes "My boss gave me one of those USB-powered red LED scrolling displays as a Christmas gift, and while cycling the usual 'I read your emails' and 'ID10T Error' messages will be entertaining for a day or two, I was wondering if it could be put to more constructive uses. The configuration file is plaintext and supports different scroll speeds, flashing, bitmaps, and WAV sounds. The font is defined as 5x5 pixels per character, also stored in plaintext as 5 hex values, one for each vertical line of pixels. A dynamically generated message could prove useful in my day-to-day work on the helpdesk, but are there any interesting uses beyond network notifications and news feeds?"

Give this man some geek points. It was explained in the books that the Kessel Run is measured in distance instead of time. To garner more infamy or prestige, smugglers would plot their courses as close to the Maw Cluster (a bunch of black holes in close proximity)as they could - skimming off distance while at the same time quite possibly getting themselves sucked in. Few people dared to do this, as it was mostly seen as suicidal. Even better, after the maw there was a huge section of asteroids. People who made it through the maw and thought they could then relax were generally not mentally or physically ready to tackle an asteroid field...
