Submission + - Surgeon Performs Wold's First Surgery in 4X HD (docinthemachine.com)

docinthemachine writes: Research just presented at the 65th ASRM on 4K surgery. Using bleeding edge Hollywood 4K cameras coupled to laparoscopes surgery was performed in 4K or 4X the resolution of HD. Since laparoscopy is performed viewing on a video monitor this is a huge advancement of resolution and clarity for the surgeon. It only took a million dollars of projectors to show it to the audience.

Submission + - Top Scientists Using Performance Enhancing Drugs (docinthemachine.com)

docinthemachine writes: "A new research study published in Nature shows unprecedented levels of cognitive performance enhancing drug abuse by top academic scientists. In this study 20% of 1400 scientists surveyed from 60 nations reported using these drugs. The most popular ones used (all illegally without prescriptions) were: methylphenidate was the most popular: 62% of users reported taking it. 44% reported taking modafinil, and 15% said they had taken beta blockers such as propanolol. Together these drugs can eliminate the need for sleep without rebound while enhancing vigilence and performance, and reduce performance anxiety. Prepare for the upcoming epidemic of performance enhancing drug abuse. I predict these drugs will be used at rates surpassing any other illegal drug in history. They have minimal side-effects and are becomming increasing viewed on college campuses as nothing more than a no-doze. The military already thinks modafinil is a good idea for soldiers and pilots. The drug is a eugeroic and offers improved memory, mood enhancement, improved alertness and cognitive powers without any of the nasty side effects and mass murder of speed and crank."

Submission + - Bionic Borg Cat Eye Implant Cures Blindness

docinthemachine writes: "A series of blindness reversing operations has just been completed in cats. Apparently, some felines get a version of retinitis pigmentosa and go blind just like their human counterparts. Several have been fortunate (?) enough to play guinea pig and receive a kitty version of an experimental human retinal implant. The 2-millimeter-wide chips are surgically implanted in the back of eye. Each chip's surface is covered with 5,000 microphotodiodes that react to light, sending electric signals along the eye's optic nerve to the brain. The post finishes up with a discussion of what should we do when the artifical limbs and retinas outperform the OEM body versions we were born with. read the full article at : http://docinthemachine.com/2007/01/22/cateye/"

Submission + - Army Cuts Future Soldier-Docs Lose Future Surgery

docinthemachine writes: "US Army has decided to axe it's $500 Million (so far) Land Warrior Soldier of the Future program. If this goes through the fallout loss of future medical technology under development will be enormous. many do not realize the enormous amount of medical technology that trickles down from the military. The program develops new HMD's and 3D vision systems and bioarmor. Surgeons today are using this technology (via DARPA) to develop new robotic surgery, bioimplants, intellegent prosthetics and more. Docinthemachine reports on the magnitude of surgical hi tech toys that will be lost if the program gets cut at: http://docinthemachine.com/2006/12/08/army-axing-h igh-tech-soldier-of-tomorrow-medtech-losses-predic ted/"
