Your point is valid if Iraq were an Island. But, in Iraq as in most of the countries surrounding it, some people (and restaurants) have satellites that carry CNN and other media outlets. And for those who don't, they are very well connected with their neighboring countries (they cross the borders to visit quite often) so they can watch the media coverage (pre-war perhaps) in another country.
The question that they have to be asking themselves is not "is this war something worth dying for" but "what would I be living for if we lost this war". The US says they're planning to Liberate Iraq. I have yet to read about a country being liberated by the US anywhere in the world. Afghanistan you ask? Just yesterday I heard about a battle going on there, months after they got a new leader.
