Comment What is the app availability? (Score 1) 54

The big problem many of these types of boxes have is the limited availability of support of streaming networks.

Does it support the CW, what about Max Go? So far most of the boxes that I have looked at only have a limited selection of apps that will work.

My android phone has more streaming video support then Fire TV, Roku, Shield, etc.

Whoever can figure out that a small app store for your device isnt the right way to go will get my money.

Comment Where is the vmware app? Need simple testing (Score 1) 167

Android needs to make it much simpler. I don't want to spend a ton of time configuring a OS. Provide some premade vm's for the Google devices and I can use real devices for the other testing. Make it easier for me to get QA and Business users to do testing, and not a major headache that eclipse setup is.

4-Billion-Pixel Panorama View From Curiosity Rover 101

A reader points out that there is a great new panorama made from shots from the Curiosity Rover. "Sweep your gaze around Gale Crater on Mars, where NASA's Curiosity rover is currently exploring, with this 4-billion-pixel panorama stitched together from 295 images. ...The entire image stretches 90,000 by 45,000 pixels and uses pictures taken by the rover's two MastCams. The best way to enjoy it is to go into fullscreen mode and slowly soak up the scenery — from the distant high edges of the crater to the enormous and looming Mount Sharp, the rover's eventual destination."

DOJ Often Used Cell Tower Impersonating Devices Without Explicit Warrants 146

Via the EFF comes news that, during a case involving the use of a Stingray device, the DOJ revealed that it was standard practice to use the devices without explicitly requesting permission in warrants. "When Rigmaiden filed a motion to suppress the Stingray evidence as a warrantless search in violation of the Fourth Amendment, the government responded that this order was a search warrant that authorized the government to use the Stingray. Together with the ACLU of Northern California and the ACLU, we filed an amicus brief in support of Rigmaiden, noting that this 'order' wasn't a search warrant because it was directed towards Verizon, made no mention of an IMSI catcher or Stingray and didn't authorize the government — rather than Verizon — to do anything. Plus to the extent it captured loads of information from other people not suspected of criminal activity it was a 'general warrant,' the precise evil the Fourth Amendment was designed to prevent. ... The emails make clear that U.S. Attorneys in the Northern California were using Stingrays but not informing magistrates of what exactly they were doing. And once the judges got wind of what was actually going on, they were none too pleased:"

Intel Co-Founder Calls For Tax On Offshored Labor 565

theodp writes "Intel co-founder and ex-CEO Andy Grove calls BS on the truism that moving production offshore to locations with much lower wages is a sound idea. 'Not only did we lose an untold number of jobs,' says Grove, 'we broke the chain of experience that is so important in technological evolution. As happened with batteries, abandoning today's "commodity" manufacturing can lock you out of tomorrow's emerging industry.' To rebuild its industrial commons, Grove says the US should develop a system of financial incentives, including an extra tax on the product of offshored labor. 'If the result is a trade war,' Grove advises, 'treat it like other wars — fight to win.'"

You didn't flip anything on its head because I didn't infer there was a good guy or a bad guy--only the government forces had every right to kill the enemy forces.

But you are right...the other people's "freedom fighters" (enemy combatants for those of us on the side for human progress) are exactly that--they fight against freedom whenever they can. Sometimes there is a right and a wrong. Killing beard police in the name of fighting terrorism is one of those.

Almost all the 3D movies I've watched were either made with 3D in the first place, and those were all good experiences. The exception was Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D, and for that, they went back to all the original data files and re-rendered them for proper stereoscopic effect. There are services that scan a 2D film and make fake 3D, but I've yet to see a 3D movie made that way.
