Intel

Submission + - Intel encodes data in flickering LEDs (and shows off other bright ideas) (pcpro.co.uk)

darien writes: "On the day before the Intel Developer Forum opens in San Francisco, Intel has been showing off some of its current research projects, including a system for encoding data in apparently steady light sources, a Kinect-based projected "touch interface" that works on any surface and an ambitious signage concept that could revolutionise your weekly shop."
Windows

Submission + - MS confirms six different versions of Windows 7 (pcpro.co.uk)

darien writes: "Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 7 will be offered in six different editions. In a seeming admission that the numerous versions of Vista were confusing to consumers, the company says that this time its marketing will focus on just two editions — "Home Premium" and "Professional". But the reality is more complex, with different packages offering different subsets of the total range of Windows 7 features."
Businesses

Submission + - Managing consumer devices in the workplace

darien writes: "Last night Symantec hosted a round-table discussion on the topic of consumer devices in the workplace. John Brigden, Symantec's senior VP for EMEA, pointed out that, regardless of the policies businesses may lay down, individuals will always try to use their favourite gadgets and websites at work. Reminds me of when I worked in IT support: no matter how many times we told users they weren't allowed to install ICQ, or to connect their personal laptops to the corporate network, they insisted on doing it. Frequently they even asked us to help them do it. What are your experiences of users bringing their own devices and services into the office? Where do you think we're headed?"
